taurusgb - I worked in a second hand book shop for several years and spent most of it reading. .

oh How wonderful - I'd be no good though, I wouldn't want to sell the books :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:. I'm with you on Josephine Tey and Georgette Heyer - haven't tried Angella Thirkell though - will do so!
Some of my favourites are:-
• Monica Dickens - particularly the autobiographical trio One Pair of hands, One Pair of Feet and My Turn to Make the Tea)·

• E M Delafield – Diary of a Provincial Lady ( her daughter R M Dashwood wrote “Provincial daughter” which I own but haven’t yet read·)
• Helene Hanff –84 Charring Cross Road, Q’s Legacy, Apple of my Eye, Underfoot in Show Business·
• Jerome K Jerome – Anything you can lay your hands on, he is VERY funny and VERY droll·
• John Braine’s 1960’s novels are very good·

• Simon Garfield – Our Hidden Lives...taken from the diaries of mass observation during WW2 (if you like this the “Nella Last’s War” is a must)·
• Dorian Amos – The Good Life and The Good Life Gets Better.·
• Anne Fadiman – Ex Libris·
• Stuart Brent – the Seven Stairs·
• Evelyn Prentis wrote 5 books that start when she leaves home to train as a nurse in 1934 and carries on through until she retires from running an old peoples sheltered housing complex
·And in no particular order I like:- Alan Bennett, John Buchan, Gerald Durrell, Gervase Phinn, Jack Sheffield, Peter Robinson, Jill McGown, Celia Fremlin, Margaret Yorke, Cath Staincliffe, Elizabeth Ferrars and R D Wingfield.

Didn't get to have a read, as my sister phoned and if I sit down with a book now there will be no dinner!

Am aiming to clean the cooker after dinner (oh I will feel virtuous when I go to bed tonight ;)) then am determind to finish some cross stitch I have almost completed.

Taurus - is 84 Charing Cross Road that one written in letter form between a bookseller and an American client? I thought that was so touching. I'm a written word addict too and would rather do without sleep than a late night read. I'm also a cross stitch nut, but haven't got the time at the mo' much to my chagrin.

The ironing is doing my nut in now but needs must................

Yes - that's the one .... true story and a wonderful read, do try her others, they are lovely books. :T Edited to add that I'm the same with stitching as with books, more than one project on the go and always looking for the next fix !!

Ditto Taurus - no one at work can understand how I can have 12 books on the go at once and still enjoy them - but it has to be a rare book to hold my full and undivided attention. I think the last one of those was the last Harry Potter which, sad to say, I did do the midnight queuing for and finished the next afternoon, resorting to going and sitting in the asda carpark on the Sat morning cause my OH wouldn't give me any peace and quiet. What with reading and the computer, I'm surprised I ever get any cleaning done.

Right oven handle cannot be fix. The bendy screwdriver is too big to fit in the gap. Mowed the back garden, trimmed a couple more lavendar bushes instead. Mr T been and gone and just last couple of bits to put away.

Best go finish tea off.

I always used to read but i can't remember the last time I picked a book up. Never seem to have the time. Maybe I should make the time - have got the latest Harry Potter so I will make a real effort to get started.

Pigpen can't believe you spent the afternoon in bed when you should have been flying. Tut tut tut.

I've cooked the dinner but the ironing will have to wait. I can't stand up for very long after having a coil fitted this afternoon at the doctors - not very pleasant but better than anymore kids I suppose. So I am going to relax this evening in front of the telly.

Have a nice evening all.
