you've been missed;)

You should write a book Badgerlady!
this is the first time I have stumbled across this thread and have to agree it makes compelling reading.
I've had lodgers for a couple of years now - not with quite as much drama luckily. I had a weird one I had to chuck out exactly a year ago now. Funnily enough I was round my neighbours house last night (having my dressing re-done) and they mentioned they saw this ex-lodger roadmendingcomechef man in a pub restaurant yesterday. he asked to be remembered to me and sent his love - eeeeuuuuuwwwww, not in a zillion years!
since he went I had a short term lodger just for 3 weeks -airlinepilotman whilst he was looking for a flat. he was nice - especially in his uniform. Immediately afterwards I got nhslady who has been with me for 11 months and it's going very well indeed.:T
I had a French girl in the smaller room for about 6 weeks. she scooted back off to France afterwards without handing back my key. when i mailed her she was very aplogetic and promised to put it in the post. 3 weeks later and no key, e-mailed and she said she'd been busy and would post it that day. A few days later an empty DL sized envelope arrived with a slit in the bottom and no key! :mad: she hadn't bothered to put it in a padded envelope or even put it in one envelope folded up before putting in another one. It either got bashed around in the postal system and the envelope ripped or someone felt there was a key inside (and my address on the outside) and took it. Either way, new barrel lock and key. Note to self, no more French! I should add that she apparently didn't like using the tumble drier and preferred to dry her things in her room. my neighbours didn't complain at seeing her smalls (and bigs) on a coathanger hanging on the curtain rail!
Ho hum.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -

Tidied and furniture rearranged, you'll have to go away more often!
Hope work isn't too busy for you and that you're being broken in gently?

haha, I think I have BadgerLady but not half as good as yours methinks.
the first guy I had was brilliant, he was a Mon-Fri and home to Essex at weekends. He was so nice that I wouldn't have minded if he was there 24/7. sometimes he would sit downstairs and have a chat before going up to his room. He has a lovely japanese wife so we had lots to talk about on the odd occasion she came down to Hampshire with him (househunting). Sadly he was headhunted back in Essex after about 6 months but we still keep in touch by e-mail regularly.
I've had a short-term let to a female teacher from NZ. she complained daily about the standards of education in this country and how badly the kids and their parents behaved. Each night I came in from work and she already had a bottle of red wine open and VERY loudly complained about the kids, the other teaching staff, the headteacher etc, how the SATS figures are fiddled. I must say she showed me some marking of year 8 and 9's work and I was appalled at the standard of English. I'm like you Badgerlady in that I like to go the extra mile and help people. I used to give her a lift to school/work even though it was slightly out of my way. I let her use my pc as she couldn't get her laptop to sync on my router. sadly these people sometimes take the mick and she got to spending more time on there than I did! she installed skype on there so she could speak to the boyf in France and it mean't i hardly got on there in the evenings. then just before I went on holiday she asked if I was taking my car to the airport! as if I'd lend it to a lodger!!!!!
then there was the man in his late twenties who was a soap dodger. showered once a week! i had to bin the pillows after 3 months as they were so greasy.
Last summer I had a lovely american lady stay for 8 weeks whilst reseaching material for a jane austen book. she was fabulous and we are in regular e-mail contact.
It is fun though, I'd hate to have an empty, quiet house now.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
Why a rent drop??0
-
i had a great lodger a few years back - he worked all the hours there were, ate out all the time, got his girl friend to do his washing, so, was never in, and i rarely saw him.
after a year of this perfect arrangement, he announced he was moving in with his girl friend, but, wanted to keep my room, as a bolt hole just in case, but, please not to tell her. .... as if i would !!!! ....
for 15 months every friday afternoon he let himself into my home, left cash on the dining table, and left - finally he asked her to marry him and left properly !
perfect lodger or what !!!0 -

My reasons are five-fold:
1) I'm on a tracker rate mortgage, so my interest payments have halved since he moved in;
2) Some rents in the area have dropped and I want to keep pace with the local market;
3) He's suffering from the same credit crunch we all are, and his employer is making threats of job losses (not very considerately, I might add!);
4) There's been no cost associated with "gaps" this year - he's seen three other lodgers arrive in the other room, with gaps in between, but he's always been there paying his rent... so effectively he has already saved me money;
5) He's always been a good lodger and has become a good friend - I actually feel better having him around to help deal with the others! So, above all, I want him to stay here and keep renting his room. I hope that a rent drop will show recognition of how much I value him, and will make him think twice about ever leaving :rotfl:Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
6) And you're a nice person0

7) and you provide absolutely fantastic lodgers for him to watch - lodger2 has had his cake, eaten it and had a free slice too!0
