    Hi Anne,

Glad you've got the MOT sorted, as a note for next year you'll be able to have it tested from 16th April 2009, if it passes you'll then get a 13 month certificate if it fails it gives you 4 weeks to sort the repairs.

Enjoy your glass of wine, and hopefully you'll not get a fine as your car was roadworthy

Anne, I was in your position, didn't realise my MOT had expired and was happily driving it round for about 3 months until I got stopped and realised my Tax was out of date as well  I was fined £80 (if I remember rightly) just for the MOT bit, nothing for the Tax, no points on my licence and a lesson learned to remind myself for future. In the grand scheme of things it's nothing major, don't beat yourself up.

Glad you got it all sorted and I wouldnt worry bout fine, doubt you'll get one.
Just a note though, on your MOT certificate towards the bottom of the page is a sticker which you can put in your windscreen it has the date of the next test due (its not law to do so) but I do this and it helps me remember.

    Good news, hopefully.

Do what manda1205 said regarding the sticker.

Hi i have a van on a 53 plate and didnt realise the MOT had expired till my dad asked when is it due we looked at it expired in November!! i never got pulled once so i guess i was lucky.

I do have one question though

my friend has bought a car its declared off road at the moment it needs a mot and tax as the tax has already expired i know you cant tax the car without a MOT would she be ok to drive to the MOT test station with no tax to get the MOT so she can tax the car or can you get points for it?

    many thanks

    Steph xx

Legally you cannot drive an untaxed car. If you get caught they can crush your car as well as fine you £1000 plus the £80 dvla charge. (Though you won't get any points for it).

Get it towed (2 wheels off ground).

Oh for goodness sake - there is a specific allowance in law - you can drive it to and from a PREBOOKED MOT witthout needing tax. You do need it insured though.

This is correct. Check out Schedule 2, Sction 22(1) of the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994.

  • Tbh if you cant be responsible enough to know when your MOT etc is due then are you really responsible enough to own a motor vehicle which is capable of so much damage

Its not exactly hard to either remember it or set up some sort of reminder on a pc, diary, phone etc etc or even just check regularly

If they cant be bothered checking an MOT certificate regularly you have to wonder if they check brakes, oil etc etc

And just because the car passed is irrelevent, it could have equally had a potentially fatal fault

I bet a £60 fine will stop you forgetting again
