Skint_Catt wrote: »Are toric lenses more expensive than 'normal' contacts?
I have an eye test appointment with D&A on Saturday (haven't had one in four years ) and in the last year I've been wearing my glasses more and more to the point I wear them all day now. All my previous prescriptions (last 17 years) have just been for astigmatism and I was thinking about trying contacts now but could do without another constant monthly expense to be honest.
Yeah they are a bit pricier Skint Catt. I have astigmatism in one eye and I think my last batch of lenses from specsavers was about £36 (daily disposables). If I didn't have the astigmatism, they would have been nearer £24 I think.
As an aside, and following on from the astigmatism debate - I play cuesports, and hav found contact lenses to be unreliable, though there are plenty of professionals who swear by contacts. I'm wondering if I'm not getting the best lenses for this kind of thing. Does anyone have any advide for this?
I currently use Specsavers lenses, so it will be whatever they normally dispense that I get.
I have thought that maybe if I was to get 3 monthly lenses, or even yearlies, I might get on better than with the dailies.
Any advice on this subject would be great...0 -
Hey BombJack...
daily toric lenses only come in limited prescriptions, the optician will just have picked the one closest to the prescription that you need. So they may not be exactly right. Monthly torics are available in a much wider range, so it is possible that you would get better vision with them.
Of course, some people never get the vision they expect with any type of contact lens, and it is a case of finding what works best for you.Wiggly:heartpulsFB0 -

yes, toric lenses are a little more expensive than non-toric. If you need a toric in both eyes our prices are:
daily disposable... £39 for 30 pairs
premium monthlies £15 per month (including solutions and aftercare)
elite monthlies £18 (including solutions and aftercare) - better material than the premium, can be worn for longer, more oxygen transmission & less dehydration.
there are a few others, like J&J Acuvue, which are dearer still, but you are just paying for the "name", most people find one of the cheaper brands just as good.
You will probably find them cheaper online, but if you have not worn lenses before it is worth signing up to a package with aftercare included, so if you have any probs you can have a check-up and not have to pay extra.
If you signed up for our direct debit scheme you can cancel at the end of any 3 month period (as the lenses generally come in packs of 3)
Sorry to be a bit "specsavers" biased but I work for them, so only know their prices, ask around to see how others compare
(oh, and I think we have a nation-wide free trial on at the minute, or very soon, not 100% sure when it starts as our branch does free trials all the time anyway)Wiggly:heartpulsFB0 -
Thanks rich girl, I will keep an eye out for Specsavers offers. I have an eye test booked at D&A on Saturday though haven't mentioned contacts to them yet. Would Specsavers accept a recent D&A prescription? (I only get it refunded once from work!) At least I have your prices to compare to D&A for the initial period. I think monthlies would be good for me - can't be doing the eye stuff twice a day and I'm lazy enough about make-up when I go to bed!

The monthly lenses generally are ones that you wear during the day and take out at night, I think you are thinking of continuous wear lenses, which you can keep in for up to 30 days & nights, although as you have never worn lenses before you will have to start off by just wearing them during the day and removing at night, to get used to them first. Wearing them continuously does have risks and your eyes may not be suitable, you will need to see an optician to let them examine your eyes and discuss the best option for you.Wiggly:heartpulsFB0 -
Ah fair enough! Yes I was thinking of continuous wear!

Just had an eye test and contact lens fitting at Specsavers. I have paid for the eye test but don't have the lenses yet. When will I be give a copy of my eye sight prescription (glasses)? Or will I have to ask for it?0

I think usually when you go to collect the prescription. you can ask them for a copy. I just picked mine up.Can't think of anything funny to put here!
