My mum wears lenses and coming up to her holiday, she saves a bottle that is running low...still bulky, but the weight is down and starts a new bottle for home...she then takes the original bottle on holiday and leaves it there..leaving room for anything she wants to bring home.
She is getting good at this, dad's shaving foam, talc, toothpaste etc.

I have bought the small plastic containers sold in Superdrug etc that you can fill with your own product, for travel.

As it's important to maintain hygiene, I rinse the new bottle well with cooled boiled water and then use the lens sterilising solution to clean the bottle really well before emptying, allowing it to dry and refilling with lens solution to take away with me.

This would probably not be recommended by opticians but I am careful with hygiene and haven't had any problems (other than occasional leakage, so keep upright or in a plastic bag if so). It doesn't seem a lot different to using lens storage containers that you have to keep clean.
  • Go to the opticians and ask for a free trial pack. Say you want to try a new solution before you buy it. I've done it in the past and they gave me a free trial pack no questions asked. :)

Or just get fitted with daily contact lenses? You won't need to worry about solutions ever again! :j

Dailies are no way near as comfy as my monthlies.

On the plus side, nipped into ASDA opticians and they sell travel packs of solutions 3x 30ml bottles for £3. Much better!

Thanks JoeyEmma, that's useful. Do you have your eyes tested at ASDA? I am looking for an optician who will be happy to do the tests without making me feel uncomfortable if they can't flog me their lenses. I have just ordered some Daysoft (thanks to this site) but my prescription is still current and when it runs out ..... ?

Nope, I have them done at Specsavers. Did get my lenses for a while from Asda though as monthly disposables and got a couple of packets of Daysoft for travel, but don't find they comfy at all and sometimes get headaches with them.

I'm with Specsavers but not sure if I will stay there as not keen on their attitude. They seem to be franchises so each branch is 'in it' for themselves.

I have tried Daysoft 72 and have ordered Daysoft 58. I rang up Daysoft to ask the difference. The 58 have lower water content but, they said, will be more comfortable. Apparently the higher water content ones absorb more moisture from your eye.

Have found the 72s pretty comfortable and I like the UV protection plus the price! so am waiting for my new delivery now. I did start on monthlies but don't find my vision as crisp, possibly because they are thicker / need to be stronger to last the month.

    Hi
I know some dailies can be uncomfortable, have you tried different brands? For example the acuvue moist daily-thats a very comfortable lens! Maybe go see your optician and see if they could trial you with some different lenses?

There is the possibility of having the extended wear lenses (ones you sleep in). Not so great if your going abroad though!

    Official MoneySavingExpert.com Insert:

If you have a Specsavers Direct Debit check your last couple of months' bank statements. Due to a Leap Year glitch some people's direct debits were taken twice. Specsavers should have reimbursed customers but if you incurred bank charges because of this then take your bank statement showing the bank charge to a Specsavers store as proof. The store will take a photocopy of your statement and you should receive a refund of that charge directly into your account.

Thanks to MoneySaver BenL for the spot.

    Back to BenL's original post....

    Morning all

I have just checked my bank account and Direct Debits for specsavers contact lenses has been taken twice.

Once on 3rd March and once on 5th.

I usually pay last day of the month so the leap year may have caused a problem and februarys payment taken on 3rd - no problem.

I have called Spec Savers Finance and they are aware of the duplication in the collection of the payments and refunds will be made to customers on Mon/Tue next week.

No action looks to be needed by customers.

Just keep an eye on your statements to make sure the payments come back in.

    Ben
