The implication of the above is that you don't need to attend for aftercare appointments after a while.

I would still recommend aftercare appointments at least every year, if not 6 months to nip any potential problems in the bud. It is of course a legal requirement before any contact lenses can be supplied.

It's worth remembering that you are putting a plastic or silicone foreign body in the eye with the hope of not inducing any side effects. Therefore, even if you have never had any problems, don't become complacent!

interesting post history from susan10... whilst working for an opticians she wants university textbooks?

Regarding Susan10 post, why would someone lie about such things? is it so impossible to believe? I am paying £300.00 per anum for my multifocal lenses, and I am researching this site in the hope of finding a cheaper deal.! I am one of a few people who have been wearing multifocal since they first came out about 20 years ago and then my first lot were Annual ! German manufactured , with three processes of cleansing and an insurance cover to pay too!! Don't be so naive everyone rips you off if they can.

O K I have looked at so much, this is an excellent site, only now I am a bit confused. Can anyone help me with this? I need a multifocal soflens I am using Bausch & Lomb at the moment with the following prescription:

    Base curve= 8.8 Diameter = 14.5 SPH..R = +3.50 L = +5.00

Some of the ones I am interested in show Base curve and Diameters of only 8.2 or 8.5 and 14.2 or 14.6 etc. Is this an important measurement?

The base curve and diameter directly affect the fitting characteristics of the lens. Even then, because they are aspheric curves (i.e.not perfectly circular) one manufacturers curve can fit very differently from anothers.

Therefore, you would be wise to stick to what you know already works i.e. B & L Soflens. Self prescribing could cause some serious problems (and is illegal). Why risk your eyes for the sake of money?

Also, you might rip someone off given the opportunity but please don't assume everyone else does. Susan10's post was badly informed and badly written - not likely to have come from somebody employed in practice or at least for any period of time! The reasons for the pricing disparity have been discussed at length in this forum and are not automatically a rip off, even if you can buy cheaper elsewhere.:naughty:

I am taking D&A up on the offer of a free eyetest but was also considering taking up the contact lens assesment, what do places normally charge for this as i do not want to get stung.

From memory, D&A charge me £35 odd for annual contact lens checkup, not sure if that's what you mean by assessment though.

I've not had lenses before so have no idea if i can even use them, so guess they just assess whether my eyes are suitable and what prescription i need.

Ahhh, I see, in that case at D&A the assessment would appear to cost £27.50 - not sure if you are then obliged to get lenses through them too.
