TV licensing were cra*p then they were privatised and went downhill from there. That said, I was shocked in america in the late 80's to see the number of adverts they show and the poor quality of their programming in general. Please don't kill me but I'm a supporter of the TV licence in principal. It is an excellent and fool proof (but unfortunately not moron proof) method of funding the BBC and providing a generally advert free quality station. People moan about the repeats, which I agree are excessive, but the BBC at least made the programmes in the first place. Lets be honest, if you didn't have to pay the licence fee they would get the money some other way.

I will say that the TV licence doesn't fund the BBC at all with this huge
company the revenue from Licences would mean It would close within
a week, TV Licensing gets its money from the government as its ran by
the Government to collect the TV tax, The license is collected for the Government not for the BBC, TV licensing collect the money on their behalf.

As its a government charter plus TV Licensing dont make TV programmes,
the Tax amount is laid out by the Gov, I bet the BBC really dont like the
Tax as it makes them look like the baddies, when its really the Govs fault..

What gets me though is that the BBC make programmes then sell them at
a lower rate to foriegn countries who dont pay a penny in License fees.

It should be scrapped as said to me yesterday by the girl on the phone
Yes its a Stealth Tax, End Off.

Oh yeah and as also said by the lovely girl in my post office
who was very helpful, When I approached the counter I said
I would like to be ripped off, she said "oh you want car tax then"
    but thats a different story.

I was told that the TV license was brought in in the 50s because the government wanted to keep tabs on people who may be transmitting and receiving messages from the enemy!

Whereas, now, the government are the enemy.
    Not even wrong

Great isn't it? State funded TV in this day and age!

With the amount of channels we now get it should be optional and if no one wanted to take up the BBC - so what, that's the whole point of human rights, democracy and a free market economy.

When the BBC started up it was just one radio station and a TV channel. Since when have we all approved them having roughly 9 TV channels and 11 radio stations with no end in site and all the vast expenditure that goes with it?

It is actually a breach of your human rights to be charged it just to listen to a radio or watch TV. No other country has it in the world.

At least two have - France & Eire I should think many more do too. I also think there is someone challenging it in the ECH.

    I stand corrected there.

I'm surprised that so many other countries have it. In fact, looking at this break down, we're actually rather depressingly not too bad off.

Lol, Mr Skint beat me to that link :o

    lol @ Skint

I save my letters from them, got one today one of the new wee blue ones made to look like some sort of official document pouch.

I'm waiting for someone to finally call round, they don't come round very much though they threaten to a lot lol. When they come I'll say hold on, and go get the letters, then I'll give them the letters (all unopened) and say "I beleive these are yours" :rotfl:

I had one when they addressed it to miss X XXXXX ( a real name just can't remember) saying that her monthly installments were late, they soon started threatening the non existant miss. And eventually it all went away, then the occupier ones came again

Maybe someone put my address when they bought a TV :rotfl:

I haven't had a TV licence here since 1995 when I bought the house. and I know there wasn't one here before that.

MORE FOOL EVERY SUCKER who buys a licence, you're just making it easy for them.

Oh and someone said it pays them to do the chasing here, no it doesn't it costs them about 10 times as much to go round chasing licences than they receive in income from the new licences they get paid for.

The only problem with that, is that it effects everyone else, non-payers
hike up the price, whether it is true or not isnt for me to decide.

I dont mind paying for stuff if its value for money, and I dont mind
telling officials where to get off, as they always have the incorrect facts.

    Skint,

Well I have an idea, they pay me what it costs for them to chase me each year, and I'll tell them if I have a TV. each year.
