TV Licensing

  • Years ago i went to live abroad and because i didn't know how long i was going to be out there i closed the house up. I informed all the relevant companies including TV Licensing who said to take the television out of the property and cancel the license. After i had gone my family who were looking after things for me a relative had power of attorney (sp) for everything including bank accounts for bills was persecuted by them. They called daily at my house even at the neighbours house to ask questions of me. In the end she phoned them up and blasted them to hell and invited them to come and pay a visit into the property as there wasn't a tv in there. It took 3 months to sort it out. S.S and Nazi are very good terms for them  Had absolutely no problem with anyone else

TV licensing were cra*p then they were privatised and went downhill from there. That said, I was shocked in america in the late 80's to see the number of adverts they show and the poor quality of their programming in general. Please don't kill me but I'm a supporter of the TV licence in principal. It is an excellent and fool proof (but unfortunately not moron proof) method of funding the BBC and providing a generally advert free quality station. People moan about the repeats, which I agree are excessive, but the BBC at least made the programmes in the first place. Lets be honest, if you didn't have to pay the licence fee they would get the money some other way.

When I got divorved, I changed back to my maiden name. Despite many letters, TV Licensing still insisted sending licences to Mrs W, so I gave up trying to tell them about the name change.

A couple of years ago my TV "died" just before Christmas which was annoying as I was very short of money, and I'd won a PS2 which was the boys main Christmas present! My Dad turned up out of the blue with a TV set which he said was my Christmas present :)

I didn't know, but he'd given my name and address as the TV owner to the shop he bought it from, and he'd told them my maiden name as that was the one I was using.

I then got a snotty letter from TV Licensing saying Miss H was using a TV with no licence. As I did have one, I assumed it was a mistake, and binned the letter.

I then got a nasty letter threatening me with further action if Miss H did not buy a licence and continued to watch TV.

It took months to persuade them that Miss H and Mrs W were the same person, so I didn't need to buy a new licence.
Here I go again on my own....
  • They've always been like that haven't they

Many years ago (about 25  ) when I was young free and single I lived alone and didn't have a tv as I was never in to watch one.

I got letters - I got letters saying they called round and couldn't get in to see me, I got letters asking for proof of my tv licence, I got letters threatening to take me to court.

To everyone I replied 'I haven't got a tv you are more than welcome to look if you make an appointment' which they ignored (someone told me later they don't like to make an appointment as they assume you will hide the tv you haven't got  ).

In the end I just wrote telling them again I hadn't got one and awaited the summons which they kept threatening to send. I had billions (slight exageration) of witnesses lined up to my lack of tv-hood.

The summons never came. They were obviously just trying to intimidate me.

I too object to paying for a tv licence just for BBC to run without adverts. They aren't any better than any other tv station.

Congratulations on and best wishes for the new baby to Mr Skint & girlfriend :D
I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.

Not exactly the same but I have had similar were people (always government departments) do not read correspondence correctly. If they continually ask me for information I simply return their letter with a scribbled comment on it saying 'please see my letter of dd/mm/yy' ... I have better things to do than waste time on civil servants wallowing in crapulence after gorging on incompetence. I did this on about 4-5 consecutive letters were they were threatening me with legal action, in the end I referred them again to my letter and told them I was more than willing to supply a copy on receipt of £25 administration fee ... for some reason I heard nothing more from them.

I have heard that you can raise an invoice to someone who is wasting your time ... I have never actually done this though. Does anybody know if this is true .. and do they get paid?

Try living in Milton Keynes where for years if we wanted TV we HAD to subscribe to NTL cable service. It was illegal to have an aerial or satellite dish attached to the house.

The cable system does not support digital TV so we are paying for all the digital channels that BBC produce (in out licence fee) and can only received BBC1 & 2. Do we get a discount - pigs might fly.
NTL refuse to upgrade the cabling.

The local law has recently changed, but to get digital we have to either subscribe to Sky or install a new aerial - both of which are costly.

I did hear somewhere that in Ireland (I'm assuming it's Northern), that so few people pay the licence it is not worth the hassle and cost of chasing them up for it, but because in mainland UK most pay it then it is cost effective to puruse those who don't. So if enough of us stopped paying it....
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

I was told that the TV license was brought in in the 50s because the government wanted to keep tabs on people who may be transmitting and receiving messages from the enemy!

Thats an awful slander on the poor old NI folk ... although it wouldn't surprise me :D:D I think most people do have a licence, however there are certain areas were nobody would be daft enough to go in and demand payment ... several officials have been beaten up in the past.
