MFW, What small thing have you done/ will you do today?

  • My first MFW post! I can't make overpayments on my mortgage at present, but I have decided to make deposits into my savings account with a MFW aim instead. I know it's not as good as an overpayment, but it's the best I can do at the moment.

I'm on maternity leave, and therefore not earning, just getting Statutory Maternity Pay, so this will start small.

    - Emptied my coppers jar and banked £7 (well, I've got to start somewhere!)
    - Did surveys on YouGov, Lightspeed and E-rewards
    - Had a NSD

Welcome! I don't know if you are aware but as you are receiving SMP you can work in a self-employed basis without losing SMP. So if you do have any spare time (!), you can do mystery shopping or AQA, for example, for extra pennies.

    Hi Floxxie,

Sorry to hijack, but that sounds like great news for me. I wonder if you have a link to any sites that explain this, as it's something I'm concerned about at the moment. I'm on SMP from today, and don't know how to date my invoices for self-employed work already done, but not claimed yet IYSWIM?!:D

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Congratulations on the impending arrival!

There have been several threads about this on this board although my searching skills are rubbish!
Just to confirm if claiming SMP you can do self-employed work (and you also have 10 days you can do at your employers). If MA, then you only have the 10 days at your employers, you cannot do any other work.

If I remember correctly, https://www.direct.gov.uk contains confirmation (if you can't find it, let me know and I shall search out the relevant parts) and also sites such as wwwworkingfamilies.org.uk

With regards to the invoices, just date them as they were. When you submit your tax return, then you will be doing it for the complete tax year (and not because of when you were claiming SMP if that makes sense?).

Had a sudden revelation of where I found the info; have highlighted teh important bit. The link is http://www.dwp.gov.uk/advisers/ni17a/smp/smp_16.asp

    Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)

Working in your Maternity Pay Period

If you are getting SMP from one employer and, before your baby is born, you do some work for another employer, your SMP is not affected.
Your SMP will stop if after the baby is born but before the end of the Maternity Pay Period, you work for an employer who did not employ you in the qualifying week. It is your responsibility to tell the employer paying you SMP about your new job. You must do this as soon as possible, and make sure you return any SMP payment you get that covers the week you started work and any part of the period after you resumed work.
If you do any work in a self-employed capacity during your MPP, then such work will not affect your SMP.

I have shopped at Aldi, done my weekly shop there for the first time ever and saved loads!

Am also, due to emptying out the change jar and selling some unwanted gold, about £150 off paying my next thousand off the ball and chain!

    :T Nice one :T.

Today I have spent zilch, paid £200 to offset, posted book sold on Amazon (comp prize :D), picked up a £10 mystery shop & also an on-line focus group for tomorrow night - £30 :j. I have also eaten healthily & am about to do 30 mins on wiifit.

If only every day was like this I would have paid off mortgage and look like Kate Winslet in no time .
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

made use of our National Trust membership for an afternoon out
    - fresh air and exercise for nothing
    - resisted the lure of the coffee shop

but... did buy a couple of books in the shop:o...but in my defence (who am I kidding?)one was reduced and the other was about using junk for crafts

but this thread has shamed me so I went onto pigsback (first time in ages) and signed up for a freebie snack box

lovely to see you here Weezl - I was thinking of you today, as I nearly bought another book on foraging (but decided to try and reserve one at library instead)
