  • esthomizzy by the time you've paid your repayment charges and an arrangement fee, valuation and poss solicitors fees for changing your mortgage you'll prob find the monthly saving is cancelled out - unless you have a superhuge mortgage?

I'm on the Live on £4000 for a year challenge with the savings going towards repaying my mortgage and family loan. My aim is to be mortgage free by the time I'm 40 (only 8 1/2 years and £141k+ of mortgage to go).

I know <sigh> but I can't help looking greedily at the super rates. My mortgage is quite large (217k remaining) so the small saving is taking into account the massive ERC but the saving is so small it's not worth doing. You are doing fabulously I decided to do the live on X for a year too last year. I decided for me 6k should be the target by the end of the year I'd spent 10k. I wonder if it would have been more if I hadn't been trying :)

I've just paid a £2000 lump sum off my mortgage, and ensured that my monthly payments stay untouched so I continue to overpay more. :D
  • Checked my savings rates (after ISA bond matured last week) and worked out that with the ridiculously low rate my ISA is now at (variable), and the fact there are no decent new accts about, I am much better off whacking a lump into the mortgage, so £5k paid in!

Still got a little bit left for 'emergencies', and can get overpayments back in a few days if I have to, so feeling pretty happy that I made the right decision and made the best of the situation.

I used £4 from mortgage pig to pay Avon lady - so dutifully went online to transfer £4 from my current account onto the mortgage.

Noticed that Quidco had kindly paid me £10.52, so transferred that over too. Not a huge amount but a nice surprise!

Yesterday I bought food for packed lunches for the rest of the week (I normally spend £2.99 in boots each day).

Kept mortgage payments the same after interest rate reduction.

Called mortgage company to ask what my maximum OP this year is to use that as my target instead
  • Increased the OP slightly more than the latest reduction from our tracker
