Made a packed lunch today. Kids not at school so there was a spare lunchbox so I thought I’d give it a go. Sainsbury’s 40p low cost bread is reasonably okay.
Drove the 50 miles to work at 60mph for the second day. I can squeeze 70 miles per gallon from my car as most of the route is motorway.
Opened a Halifax Reward Account for the £5 a month credit. Which to me translates as ‘Bank with us and we’ll pay 25% off your phone/broadband’.0 -

Wow - what car have you got? I thought my Juliet Bravo was doing well at 61 :TA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

5 year old Diesel 1.6 Ford Focus. I stuck myself behind a lorry doing 50 mph all the way home tonight and the car says I'm getting 78mpg  . That's with coasting down hills and not having to change lanes. Only took me 10 minutes longer to get home.0 -
Just changed from BT unlimited evening and weekend calls to the 12 month version which is free! £3.10 a month saved.
Also just signed up to 18185, which although we don't use the phone all that much, should hopefully save us another £3 or so each month0 -
I now regularly pack my lunch with sandwich and fruits. I have been doing it for several months.
Also managed NSD at least 4 days a week.
For grocery shopping I often pick up the basket than using the trolley. shop usually at morrison.
Most of light bulbs at home are energy-saving.
I am determined to stay frugal until my mortgage is paid off (target before the end of 2010).
this winter, saved energy bill by using hot water bag in bed and fluffy gown in the evening.:p

I've just had a delivery date for my company car for fortnight today which I chose because it will do 88mpg extra urban. I currently get around 60mpg out of my Bora. Compnay car is a VW Polo Bluemotion. Hoping it lives up to the hype as I do 72 miles a day on the motorway and will save me quite a bit.0 -
got £55 cashback through from home insurance so have transferred that to mortgage.
also transferred over the money we would have usually paid as council tax and water rates this month.
made a yummy beef stew yesterday and showed great restraint by not eating it all - so the leftovers can be recycled into chilli con carne tonightweaving through the chaos...0 -
I'm on course for not buying lunch any day this week:j.
I stayed at my BF's last night and remembered to turn my heating right down before I left to save gas.
My car service was £6 cheaper than they quoted (it all helps;)) and I managed to avoid paying the insurance on the courtesy car by putting it on my own insurance. And there was enough petrol in the car to last me the day - usually I have to put a few pounds in.
I've made the maximum overpayment allowed this month and still have a reasonable amount left in the budget, even after treating myself to a new waterproof coat so I'm on a roll this month:j.0 -
All the bills for the month have gone out of the joint account and it's (just) still in credit- yay for getting that sorted this month! And thats the way the account is going to stay from now on. After about 4 years of being debt free it was the only thing still in the red (aside from the mortgage of course) and for some bizarre reason we just carried on like that.
This week is the week my friend and I pay ourselves from our business so that'll be going straight off the mortgage.0 -
Just thought I'd try and revivie this thread a bit.
I've brought my own lunch into work every worday this year so reckon i must have saved loads which gets ploughed into the overpayment pot.
As interest rates have dropped I've kept my monthly mortgage payment the same so have been adding to my overpayment that way too.
I now regularly use cashback sites and shopbots to find the best deals on anything i'm buying and make the payments using a cashback credit card.
I phoned to cancel my Barclaycard as the cashback was 0.5% (and I already had the eggmoney card with 1% cashback). Barclaycard asked what they could do to keep my custom and i told them to improve the cashback offer so I've now got 2% on first £200 each month and 1.5% thereafter (for a 6 month period) plus free card protection for a year.
Can't think of anything else.
What is everyone else doing to try and maximise those mortgage overpayments?MS Stalwart. Used site for >10 years :jMake Do, Mend and Minimise member - focussing on upcycling/repurposing and sewing0
