  • Essexhebridean - I never saw the piggypoints from my lovefilm trial and found them really unhelpful when I chased. Gave up in the end but now Amazon DVD rental is LoveFilm so am back with them (still no points though  ) I was boycotting PB for a while in protest but then decided that was v childish as I was the only one missing out :p Am now back onboard! :D

    Today I have:

Stashed all the money into the appropriate savings pots (as per new Plan) as is DH's payday

Cycled to station on freecycle bike instead of driving to save £1 parking though probably not worth the sheer terror of failing brakes and gears

Took sarnies on train for lunch rather than snack in london

    I will:

    Do my PB comps

    Enter comps on MSE

    Water neglected veg patch :o

    Watch tennis with GnT!

Still going well on the Don't throw food away challenge - I can't believe how empty the fridge looks but I have everything in there I need for the next few days meals. :T

Remember, your fridge will try to cool the volume inside. Lot's of space will impact this (you remember the idea of lots of boxes in the attic to help insulate?). You may want to keep long term items in the fridge with a good heat capacity, like drinks to minimise air in there, which of course rushes out when you open it. The drinks however will remain cold in their bottle/cans, so once cooled down it may be more economic to run the fridge with them in place. Bulk buy some coke etc to get them at best value now you know the space to be filled.

If you get one of those units to measure energy consumption first you may ten be able to judge difference? (Must think about getting one too!)

Remember your car is most polluting and least efficient when first running (catalysts work once hot), so you probable get about 50-60% of your normal economy in the first few miles. You saved much more than the parking fee :j

Also, exhaust gases condense initially until the muffler etc are hot; on short journeys this won't happen so you'll corrode the exhaust system faster.
Hint: if you do have your exhaust replaced, do take it for several journeys in excess of 30 miles to help develop a good oxide inside.

Today I will only buy the few things on my list at the supermarket. It's my Mum's birthday party tomorrow so I'll pretty much get fed for the whole weekend and then I'm away with work for the most of the next two weeks and away at the weekends so I really don't need any food. The savings on food and a small amount of work expenses should pretty much pay for the weekends away:T . I must remember to turn off the hot water as well. And if I snaffle the toiletries from the hotels I shouldn't have to buy any for a while. Looks like being a very MFW fortnight!

Today I have been quite good . I have put the washing machine on a short wash of 30 mins instead of 68 mins.
    Line dried all my washing.
Took the bus to work saving petrol and parking money. I will do that until end of July.
Divided this months money into envelopes for my weekly shop that are sealed so that nobody is tempted to borrow any money. I plan to put any spare money into the holiday fund .

Eating home grown radishes and lettuce now, carrots nearly ready. Peas are flowering so am hopeful that these will be a success. We managed to eat our first strawberry today (shared it with my 2 children) - all the ones ready previously have been munched by something (even with nets in place).

Buying more supermarket own brand products - does make a difference to the bill but minimal difference in quality with most items.
    Mortgage free in 2014
  • I line dried my washing too today as it was very windy.

Got my Co-op dividends through with some vouchers so got loads of shopping for just over £6, included 3 chickens marked down due to near sell by date but they were freedom food ones so not too bad, also bogof cheese and fruit. I bought stuff I would normally buy and did well, won't have to do a big shop, only bits at the weekend.

Do you guys know about the price war at the mo between asda and tesco? Its on other threads but worthy of a mention here, asda are selling 10 items for 50p each this weekend only. Might be worth checking it out.

Ebay auction on at the mo with bids! :)

  • My Mum is doing an OU course and inadvertently deleted her current assignment. I managed to retrieve part of it for her, and offered to retype her remaining notes that she had painstakingly typed herself - we both have MS although hers is much worse and means one finger typing and she never was a typist anyway, whereas I can still go reasonable quickly. I did it just because I could, but she rewarded me by paying for some smoked mackerel & soya beans that her PA had bought for me. Long way round of saying I spent the fuel getting there, but got something in return that saved me more! I guess what goes around, comes around - yay!!
:( Struggling too much wears a body out
