what happens if more than one travel insurance policy is in effect

Have you read the full policy conditions? I seem to remember reading on travel insurance that if you are covered by two policies that (this insurance company) would only pay its share of the claim. In that case you would have a duty to inform that insurance company of the other one. I'd try to get them to sort out amongst themselves though. You don't want to be caught in the middle or have to deal with two companies so I'd pick the best, deal with them alone, and tell them about the other company so that can claim direct of them. That must be less work for them as surely there is honour among thieves, I mean among insurance companies. So in theory the other company doesn't have to do so much work.

    Hi everyone

We are going away in august and have booked flights and apartment seprately, we need to get travel insurance and wanted to know if we need different insurance as it is not a package holiday, so would we need different cover if one of the other was cancelled or delayed, or will just a normal insurance policy do.

Sorry for the questions just we normally book with a tour operator and a package holiday but done it different this year.

We have flights booked with First Choice

    and apartment with owners direct.

Thanks in advance, we are a family of 5

Just a normal holiday insurance policy cover the holiday in it's entirety not matter how it is booked.
You can have a one trip policy or annual insurance policy.

I have an annual policy and I have booked two holidays since the policy was in force as it doesn't matter which type of trip or holiday I book.

Spurs - Excelent choice in football team by the way -

It is TRAVEL insurance not Package holiday insurance.

Advice though - Do not buy travel insurance through your Travel Agent.
Do not buy Axa or White Horse policies.
I Recommend (In order of preference) Post Office (Fortis Insurance), Direct Line, Tesco, RBS, Insure& Go.
BUT check with any prosperctive insurer that their T&C's regarding Cancellation and delay (as this seems to be your main concern) are adequate for YOUR requirements.

Point of interst - Cancellation does not cover "Acts of God' and that means volcanic ash delays will NOT be covered my the majority of policies.

I questioned Europ Assistance this morning and put the point over (a bit of a dig really) that the "ash" situation was not an Act of God as the CAA and British Government decided to ground the aircraft!

    You can imagine the response!!!

    Hi FH Brit

Thanks for the reply, I know great choice was at the arsenal game weds night, great day for us just need to do chelsea. lol

Ok we normally have insurance with tesco for holidays but i thought we might need different insurance as it is not a package holiday.

I understand what you are saying about act of god situation (hope it still not going on when we fly) sure in that case though airline should put you on to next available flight.

Its just when we go away which is always kids summer hols there always seams to be a strike either airlines or bagage, and just wondered what happens if there is, i spose they put you on the next available flight.

Thanks for the info will take a look at the post office and see what they come up like for prices.

Also i paid for flights with credit card, and am just about to pay balance of apartment, would you advise to pay that with credit card, would we be covered more.

    Thanks again

Spurs - Tesco is as good as you are gonna get - Post Office is excelent - but you'll pay for it.

My concern is that not telling them could be considered fraud. If I do claim from both I will certainly be telling them so. I think maybe to claim from one and ask them to contact the other and sort it out between themselves is the way to go.

Having duplicate insurance should cause you no issues whatsover - Insurance companies are used to this and have agreements in place when this happens. Basically IC A would deal with & pay your claim. They would then write to IC B and ask for a contribution.

Absolutely no point in witholding information from them :silenced:

Although im surprised that they are covering at all - General consensus within the industry (& by the ABI) is that no cover as most insurance policies are cause specific.............And as yet no policies have a specific cause of 'Ash clouds'................ Nothing to do with 'Acts of God'
