FH Brit is rather keen on Fortis. I've just been doing a bit of digging and found Preferential, who are underwritten by Fortis. On Moneysupermarket they have a worldwide annual policy starting at £24. You don't get a lot for that, but if you just want basic cover then that's an option. It gets quite a bit steeper if you want extra cover, but might still be worth it.

Another thing is they don't automatically renew it, so you don't get them automatically taking the money from your card in a year's time and have to remember to ring to cancel.

Anyone any experience with Preferential Travel?

If relative is to ill to travel and they cancel and we also cancel holiday what are we all able to claim back? ( I haven't set up my insurance for me and wife yet but relative has annual policy). What would happen if me and wife still go on holiday but relatives doesn't considering they are to / will be paying for 1 of the weeks?
    Thanks in advance!

You will not be able to claim anything back for you and your wife since the circumstance with your relative has occurred before you have travel insurance in place. Do you have any existing travel insurance as part of a bank account or credit card?
  • Thanks for replies. No insurance I'm afraid. Question is, if relative paid for all our flights but obviously it's each persons individual name against each flight will relative be able to claim for all of us if we all cancel as it was they who made the booking and paid out the money to the airline? (even though we are not in his insurance)?

Highly unlikely I would think. Your relative should be able to claim costs for his flights and perhaps all of the accommodation providing that the recent medical condition is not related to any other pre-existing medical condition that was not declared to the insurers.

Depending on which airline you are booked with it may be worth reclaiming the cost of taxes if you do not travel.
  • OK after a bit of digging and comparing ive narrowed it down to the following options for single trip policy which all appear to have same level of cover;
    -the AA
    -direct travel insurance
    -american express
    -columbus

all the above are around the £30 to £35 mark
(or the post office or direct line at £50 but cant see what the extra £15 gets you!)

Anyone had any experience of any of these?
    cheers
  • Hi all,

Just booked a holiday to Spain, villa and flights separately, and am looking at purchasing travel insurance. There are 6 of us: Me, Hubby, 2 daughters (4 + 6) and both Grannys. My question is, do I buy insurance for the party as a whole or do I buy family travel insurance for us and let the Grannys get there's separately? Will it be much difference in cost?

Thanks in advance for any replies. :money:

I think you'll find that out of those only columbus covers you for missed departure due to an accident ahead of you on a motorway. Same goes for scheduled airline failure I think. If this is a package and you travel to the airport by rail etc. then this may not be important.
  • We have been insured for an annual couple worldwide (incl USA) with Atlasdirect for yonks and last year the premium was £45 and an extra £9.49 each with their medical screening tel line. I have asthma & my husband high blood pressure.
This year Atlas have quoted a renewal of £50 but when I rang their medical screening tel line (which is a new one I think) I have been quoted £91 for the same condition that cost me the £9.49 last year!
How can that be? What a jump! I am 54 and hubby 59 but even though, that's some increase.

If you through TopCashBack they are offering £20 cashback on single trip travel policies through Aviva until 31st March.

Mine, for a male in his twenties with no underlying health conditions + personal baggage cover came to £38 for 11 days in the USA, so £18 after cashback.

You can't normally use the cashback sites if you have PEMC's to declare.
