The thing is, if you've bought a home close by, you'll see your house plummet in value. Its really not fair on the hard working class who have done well to buy their own only to see it plummet in value by the councils decision to move a trouble family close by.Illegitimi non carborundum.0 -
Erm... i'n not one to say i told you so... but i predicted that this would happen a few weeks back..!! serch my posts if you can be ar$$ed cos i can't.
The added benefit of this is that the uk gets a great deal of it's social housing back. No ghettoisation, and the builders who've had housing associations over a barrel for the last few years get it up the jacksie themselves, along with the BTL'ers Also should somewhat have an effect on slowing down the crash.
Course the nimby factor is a problem... then again i had a £500k house in a residential street, in london, with some council stock, nearby and a crack house 8 doors up, and sold it no probs... was very close to a top 20 league table secondary school tho..and then agian, that was last august!!0 -
Well I definitely disagree with the OP. Last year I was a student and moved into a council house.
I have lived with my partner for 2 years, and we have one child. I am now working as a qualified teacher and definitely not a chav, riff-raff or scumbag or infact, any other derogatory term that you would like to call people who live in council houses.
I am 21 and without a deposit, have absolutely no chance of buying a house.
Does this make me a chav?
P.s. - I look after my property as if it was my own. I have a family and take pride in my houseLBM - 30/07/09
Started DMP in Oct 2009, went wrong. Due to start new DMP in March/April 2013. Bring it on!

I'm lower working class, he's socially deprived, they're chavs.
So what does that make me then?
I class myself as working class but not working at present which subsequently means that I claim benefits.
This is not by design but more circumstance (long story but not all benefit claimants are bad people)We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
it's not about class, it's about attitude and respect for other people
there are plenty of middle class and upwards people severely lacking in theseIt's a health benefit ...0 -
BTW lots of councils grant planning permission for bigger estates providing the developer passes over some cheap houses to the council or H/A. Rough and tumble of doing business, and people who pay top whack shouldn't really complain. I also don't think all council tenants are all bad either and suspect they will be vetted for the nicer properties to ensure the properties are looked after.
the key thing about this story from what i read in the paper, is that this housing is not part of the original cheap housing for council or HA, but the main stock which the developer cant shift.0 -
By accident, all the social housing that was sold off could now be replaced .........just like that. This time around, though, it would be more sensible to issue 5 yr tenancies, say, so that if peoples financial circumstances improved, they vacate to release affordable housing for someone else.
When we lived in an LA high Rise (a la Nil by Mouth) we weren't remotely chavy, scumbaggy or antisocial, we were just poor...........and most of our neighbours were just like us.
A few made the place a nightmare for the majority..and the concrete cancer, ants and cockroaches didn't help....but they were the fault of the 60's artichitect with his vision of creating high density living space made out of concrete blocks.
Some of us worked our butts off to enable ourselves to move out at some point.
The guitarist of T'Pau (an 80's band) lived upstairs, got a no 1 hit single and moved out.
PS It's being 'decanted' at the mo and soon to be demolished.0 -
Well I'll certainly stick my hand up and declare myself a nimby, snob, or whatever you want to call me. My own house is in a very nice area. Beautiful 12th century church over the road, driveways occupied by prestige cars, well tended gardens and good local schools where all the kids speak English and are mostly well behaved. No loud stereos or people shouting four-letter words in the street.
I certainly don't want to live somewhere with a load of HA or LA tenants, 'works' vans parked up in the driveway (so many residential areas look like small industrial estates), chavs with lowered cars and loud stereos, revving engines etc. Yeah, I'm a nimby and I really like it that way. You have'em in your back yard.0
