    Hello again.

    Major rant!!!

Am I a total cow - pigpen, read the following before you say yes! I've just had a row with my friend. She did me a favour by having dd tonight after school as i'm on a course. Both our children have SATs tests at school tomorrow, maths. I'm laid back about them and just help dd with five minutes maths a night which can be anything from tables, to money...anything short and fun. Well, my friend takes the two children home and then gives them a SATs paper to do, a whole 45 minutes maths paper.

My friend then crows to me that DD could only do half the paper and my DD was really upset. She showed me the paper and she had given DD a year 6 paper when she's only in year 4. Friends daughter is year 6.

I pointed out to my dd that she's actually passed a year 6 paper even though she could do half of it and anything she gets now will be really easy. But I am so mad at my friend for doing that. Would you make a child who'd come to play do a SATs paper?

My dd has always struggled with maths and we've really built her confidence up this year so I was seething. I made a joke of it to her and she's happy now but how stupid can you get. Is it any wonder that my friends younger daughter (7) has nightmares and wakes up screaming 'I can't do that question mummy, don't make me do anymore'. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

    Rant over!

Mudbath.. nah she sounds like a hag of a mother!!! The SATs are an assessment of the teachers ability to teach not the childs cleverness.. they are getting rid anyway as schools are only teaching what is on the papers and not what is in the curriculum leaving big gaps in their learning.. so pass that on to DD.. DDs1 &2 do SATs papers for fun.. they are odd things my children! The pox upon her!

Thanks Soappie and Pigpen....DD just came down and said how worried she was for tomorrow - after I'd spent weeks building her confidence up. I told her your messages and she can't believe that someone who doesn't know her know's that she's really clever, lol. She just went back upstairs saying 'well, I must be clever if the lady with the nice dog says so!'. You're a star!!!!

I've explained again it's about testing the teachers and she liked that idea. I'm just annoyed that i'd got her to a stage when she was loving doing the SATs and one silly so called friend undid it all! She's just phoned up to see if i've calmed down!!!

Anyone for a glass of wine as I feel I need one xx

I'll raise a virtual glass with you Mudbath - I've had my quota for the evening and am about to go to bed.

Give your DD a big hug from me in the morning and tell her I'm rooting for her - she'll do fine.

  • Hi Mudbath,

My daughter is in year 4 as well, and I like you, spend minimal time with her each evening doing sums for fun. Im afraid i dont really have the time to go over sats papers with her, and to be honest, i dont really want to!!
School at their age should be fun. My daughters been doing her sats this last couple of weeks too, and she isnt bothered about them in the slightest. I did make a point of explaning though, that it was to see how good her teachers teaching ability was, and that was all.
I really dont believe in stressing children out, about things such as Sats....they should be allowed to *Children*

I would feel exactly the same as you do, and probably kicked up a massive row with my friend too. In fact i would say she had no right to give your child a sats paper...and especially one for 2 years older.

Well done to your daughter for doing as well as she did... She's the star!:starmod::staradmin
(And your dd has also shown you, that both your own and the teachers teaching....is working wonders.;))

Dont feel bad for reacting the way you did. I have a feeling that your friend is probably feeling worse than you.

    Hugs
