Mine was renewed in 2007 and is 8 digits, will check daughters when she gets home and see if heres is any different as she only passed her test in November.

Doe, You're a :T STAR :T - if you could check your daughter's and let me know tonight, that would be doubly wonderful.

It's all to do with some changes to some software that I have to test. There's a requirement about changing the validation on a particular field so it accepts N.I. driving licence numbers. I talked to the developer about it today - asking what the rules are. He said he'd taken the rules from the UK DVLA website (which give the 16 char/digits stuff). He was quite assertive in the way he said "and of course, as NI is part of the UK, it will the same".

I thought I'd double check and found the reference on the DVLNI site to 8 digits for the old licence. If your daughter's number is of a similar construction to yours, then I can make sure he does the proper thing which is verify exactly what that requirement means :) rather than guess.

Perhaps you could also clarify something else for me - reading the DVLNI site, it implies your licences need regular renewal. In the UK, you get your licence and you keep it until you're 75 unless you get points or move addresses (hence I've still got the old green paper one rather than the new fangled photo ID one...). If they do need renewal, how often is that?
