I have signed up with 18866 today on first try, thinking this will be best option for me as I use phone equally peak and off peak times.

Have been trying to sign up to 1899 for two weeks now, no joy, just same 'no capacity' message keeps appearing. So this morning tried 18866 and got same message. Then read this thread and suggestion from Edinburghlass and tried the mobile alternative suggestion on both sites. STILL getting same message.
That's the first time I've heard of that happening. Perhaps they've been reading MSE and have closed that 'workaround'.

    Nearly, but not quite right.

From a BT landline, 18866 charge 4p connection and 0p/minute at all times for UK 01/02 calls.

    1899 charge 25% less.

BTW, 18185 (4p connection and 5p/minute during the week and 2p/minute at the weekend) is cheaper than 1899 and 18866 for calls to UK mobiles.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Hi there, new to MSE, great site.

But getting seriously fed up with 1899 and 18866.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone else experienced the same?

I sent them an email last week asking what the problem was and got a standard email back, saying to try again in 6 months! I replied (irritated) saying that they should perhaps put this on their home page rather than letting people take the time to go through the registration process, inputting personal bank details etc. to then find out they can't sign up. May they have blocked me from being able to sign up? It's just I notice that a couple of other people have been able to sign up with the mobile number idea and I still can't.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Can I just ask if you put in your landline number as well as a mobile number when you tried again?

As the tip is to just put in your mobile number until you get the confirmation email, then go back in and add your landline number icon7.gif

Like Heinz says I have not heard of this happening before and as a rule it is just 1899 that sometimes rejects new customers due to capacity problems.
  • I just entered my mobile number the second time, and have tried it a few times but still the same message. Have a feeling I am being blocked because of my email to them! Seems strange I can't sign up for either of their services, with land line or mobile numbers. I'll have to try my husband's details instead and see if that gets me in. Thing is, we share bank account so if they have blocked me on that then I'm stuffed.

Can I just check though, there isn't a button to click whether you're entering a mobile number or landline number, is there?
  • It seems they did block me. I cleared my cookies and tried again using mobile number and it worked. So it seems, if you try with landline number and it fails 'due to capacity issues,' you need to clear your cookies before you try with mobile number.
    Hooray!
  • Great news :T
  • I have an NTL phone line (rent free with my TV package) and have been with 1899 for some time. However, calls have now gone from free (apart from connecting charge) to 1/2p per minute which trebled my last bill. Any advice?

Yes it went up some time ago.

When do you make most of your 01/02 calls peak or e&w ?

One supplier who does cheaper calls for cable customers is https://www.phone.coop another is https://www.firsttelecom.com .However 1899 might still be best for you at peak rate.

By the way you do pay line rental with NTL ,the cost is loaded in your total package! Your probaly paying about £10.50p a month at least.

I have looked around at some of these services such as http://www.18185.co.uk/, until yesterday I was on BT Option 2 and when I took the time to work it out I was not really saving and in some cases loosing out being on Option 2.

Today I have gone back to Option 1.

Now I am looking at some of these pre-dial call providers all look atractive but http://www.18185.co.uk/ has caught my eye above the rest. I have looked through the site at great length but i can not find this info. Is their anyone on this already that could advise please.

1/ I am only going to make UK calls, so if it's as it says on the site 4p how long can I stay on that call for 4p ? e.g. BT 5.5p calls are ltd to 60mins.

2/ What is the pricing with non-geo numbers such as 0845 and 0870 and the like ?

3/ Could I pre-fix my pay as you go internet number with 18185, if thier is a saving to be had on 0845 numbers ?

4/ Finally can any one give this service the thumbs up or is their better still out their.

Many thanks for any advice or help that may follow.

    Cheers

    Hi Jay

You can of course use 18185 for all your calls but for the best savings you really need to pick and choose. For example https://www.call1899.co.uk is cheaper for 01/02 calls at 0p per minute with a 3p connection. Like 18185 and 18866, the connection charge is for the entire length of your call with no limit making it much better than a 60 minute call with say BT.

BT is the cheapest for 0845 calls but 18185 at peak times is the cheapest for 0870 calls. You can check the rates for these calls in the rate drop down menu on the website of 18185.

No you can't prefix your internet dial up number with 18185 the only way that can be done is if you can find a geographical number for your ISP.

Yes, I can certainly give the thumbs up to 1899/18186 and 18866 icon7.gif

I have had an account with 18866 for more than two years when I started with them it was cheaper for me to call NZ in the morning than to call my next door neighbour.

I have an account with all three and mainly use 1899 now for daytime 01/02 calls, 18185 for calls to NZ, daytime 0870 numbers and for mobile calls and I haven't used 18866 much lately as it has been superceded by 1899.
