Hello,
me and the OH have got our first place together and I've decided I want to grow some veg on our new patio.
Any hints or tips most welcome.
At the mo' I've started off tommies in a hanging basket and have basil and mixed salad in the house in one of those little greenhousey things.
And I've got sum alfalfa seeds soaking.
My dad is actually a horticultural lecturer, but I haven't got any of the greenfingers, and he has never bothered planting veg, much to my mam's annoyance - being married to a gardener and having to buy your own potatoes!DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
you dont have to have green fingers u just have to try, its great to go and pick your veg etc when and where u want it, were lucky being on a farm cos we ahve plenty of space and now dug up a portion of a field and planted pots and end up having enough to last 2 famillies for 9 months after we also have parsnips cauli, cabbabge, carrots, etc etc its very rare i ever have to buy any veg! must of done some good my son hit 6ft when he was 12 lolInside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out - but I can usually shut her up with cake!0

Garden as it was in February:
Now with the new veg patches:
So far I have planted out runner beans and sweet peas in the first bed and pots are just starting to show next to them. I already have a row of sugar snap peas and regular peas in.
I grow lots of my veg in guttering first and then slide it out into the main bed. My soil is very clayey so I dug a whole trailer load of manure into the two new beds in the spring.
The second bed is for carrots/spring onions/onions/corn and tomoatoes.
Both ends have estatblished strawberry bed. I am going to pot up runners this year and may start a new strawbeery bed where the raspberries are to give more space in these bedsThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
Thought everyone would like to see our newly formed vegetable patch. Its only small but theres only 3 of us in the house so nothing bigger needed at the minute. It costs us about £50 to make and do including all the seeds and plants etc...
That is brilliant and exactly what I want! How did you do it - was it easy?0 -
i am only growing 2 pots of tomatoes this year as i am awaiting abdo surgery in the next 2 -3 months and dont want to put a lot effort in only to loose the crop while i am away in hospital and recouperating at mums - 2 pots is an acceptable number to take to my mums and expect them to keep an eye on for me. last year i had quite a few pots on my patio and decking and did quite well.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0

it was very easy for me as mr divadee built the beds.
The raised beds were made with 9 lengths of 1.8m decking boards. 3 were cut in half so each bed is 1.8 x 0.9. We got these from a neighbour for £1 each, but B&Q do them for £3 on a Going Going Gone Friday normally.
The bark we already had as the whole back area was covered in play bark as this area was little miss divadees play area so we used up that.
The picket fence was also reused as little miss divadee had about a quarter of the garden for her play area screened off with the fence, but we moved it to make our little enclosed veg patch.
we did have to buy some stuff, like compost, fertiliser, seeds and a cold frame again B&Q Going Going Gone Friday, and 2, 99p slabs to sit the cold frame on. But the rest was reused from friends and family and neighbours.
I will post some more piccys later, I have started putting some more onions in pots today0 -
Ooo... I dont know if I like this thread or not! I am feeling a bit green(with envy) the only things that are slowly coming on for me are potatoes. Anything else has grown for an inch and died! This is my first year and was always going to be a bit hit and miss. It would help if I took the time to read up on the things I have planted. I think I might just cheat this year and buy some veg to bring on rather than grow from seed. I have done this with strawberry plants and they are coming on a treat!0

You;ve all done incredibly well............I don't have hi tech camera to show photos of our bit .........just as well really as at the minute there's nothing to show except empty pots !! We've been given some trailing tomatos and the ordinary sort and tomorrow OH is getting grow bags and compost that we need..............potatos are planted in potato barrel and they're starting to come through.
Our herb patch is looking a little sad. We normally grown groups of herbs in medium sized tubs -6 altogether - and surround them with brick edging so when they''re all on the go it looks like a proper raised bed but so many that we thought would be popping up by now havent so we'll have to fork out and buy some more. OH is growing runner beans in an old tin bath this year and says he'l buy plants to bring on.Had seeds year before last that were disappointing, plants last year were good so speaks for it self really......well, for us anyway.
Keep the piccies coming, keeps me inspired.
MrsMcCawber..................your pots are so neat and tidy........how do you do it ??? We always end up with our garden looking a bit on the 'messy' side except the wild life bit at the bottom which takes care of itself so is meant to be a bit 'rambly'.Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Hi Mary
I have a really big problem with things having to be symetrical :rotfl: out doors im trying to break the habbit..but things still have to go in lines... mind they are having to be neat n tidy at the moment as im fast running out of room:o ... I actualy prefer to see the wild and natural look ..but with army gardens i just can't do it.. im trying to make it so that once everything is potted up i will just have to run round with the watering can ....
Its only my 2nd year of growing and my 1st one here so im being a bit ambitious :rotfl: but it will either grow or it won't
Can't wait to see what everyone else is doing..im on the lok out for more ideas-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
My garden would give you nightmares then............I can't bear to have things in any kind of order -though there's a big chunk of me wants the 'tidy' look- I get torn between random pots around the place and stuff overgrowing and some sort of tidiness. Seem to be fiighting a losing battle with myself (and the garden).................lol
Looking at yours I want mine to look like that............the veg area anyway........wonder if I can entice my equally disorganised OH to re-arrange his pots.....................:rotfl:Mary
