I would send a message back telling them that you have posted their heartless reply on MSE! Also, tell them you're off to Facebook! I bet they give you a refund then.
They must have known some time ago the site was going to be made free, and yet they took people's money - crooks!0 -
I wouldn't exactly call them crooks. They must have known some time ago the site was going to be made free, and yet they took people's money - crooks!
However, you're right about one thing - they must have known for ages - you don't make a decision to give up a sizable income on a whim. They'll have compared their service to other networking sites like Facebook & Bebo, membership figures, growth over the last month/quarter/year etc & it will have taken several weeks if not months to make the decision to stop the charges. It would have been fairer, once they'd decided to make the site free, if they'd made any renewals due after say 1 Jan/Feb only for 6 months (to allow for possible delays in the change in service), saying something like "changes are coming, but we can't say what yet". It wouldn't have taken long to change their site set up to accept a six-monthly fee, & at least people wouldn't feel like they've been cheated.
Some people are very cheesed off that they've paid for a year that others will now get for free for the sake of a difference of a few weeks. Even though FR is now free, I know of people that say they won't use it once their paid-for subscription has expired, so I suspect FR will show a drop in membership despite no fees being charged.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

I contacted Friends and asked about the refund and got the following reply...
Unfortunately, as you subscribed some time ago now (it's actually over 3 months), we believe you have made use of your subscription and we will not be offering you a refund.
Whilst we understand this will not be the response you would like, we do hope you will enjoy the new features we've added to the site for you.
As you can imagine, in moving from being a subscription service to a free service, there were always going to be members like you who subscribed in the period before the change.
We hope you can appreciate our position and that we have tried to make this as fair as possible for all concerned.
I would suggest you all contact them and ask the same-especially if you've only just paid....support@friendsreunited.co.uk :T

I renewed in February and have used the site several times. Yesterday I asked for a refund of the £7.50 and received a reply today saying they had refunded as a goodwill gesture. So please everyone, just ask and you may be rewarded0 -

Trouble with facebook is if you are female and been married then you have no way of searching for maiden name my name on facebook is not the same as on friends so no one who I went to school with would ever find me on facebook that and the fact I changed my set up to not come up in search results also when searching say I was searching for a john smith
how many would come up and how long would it take to find the right one considering not everyone joins a network at least on friends I am only looking for people who are listed in my school or workplace I just contacted and old boyfriend only to say hi strange to see what he looks like after all these years!Too little, too late for me....
Now Facebook has come along, FR is dead. Facebook has always been free and is MUCH better.Mortgage overpayments 2008 (started August) £3000
