Friends Reunited drops its £7.50 subscription fee

I'm not sure where to post this so if it is in the wrong place I'm sorry.
Perhpas there should be a seperate thread about genes reunited the sister site. I have been a member for the last 4 years and although a couple of years ago the subscription was hiked to £9.95 for 6 months as a full member I notice there is now another pricing tier been added called gold membership at £34.95 for six months I wonder if we standard members have been ripped of somewhere, I'm sure we used to be able to access the census records birth cert' etc on normal standard membership and just had to pay to get a copy. does anybody know about this. As I cannot see genes united allowing you to fully acess these records in the gold membership as they would loose a fortune.

When did the free membership start? They took £7.50 off me on 12 th April.....have emailed to ask for my money back but have had no answer yet.

If memory serves me l think GR was bought by Ancestry, which if corect would explain the price hikes, and charging for acces same as Ancestry

I was a member for ages, still have bits of tree there, but never renewed this year


HereToHelp- GR, like FR was always free to register, the "catch" was you could not contact anyone without paying, AFAIK with GR this is still the case, you can register, upload tree etc but not contact another member - may have changed but I have not tried in last month

yes, that was a major problem. People wouldn't pay the money just to reply to the odd mail or two, especially to anyone not of interest to them. Bad manners or what!!

i dont know if anybody else as noticed, when you pay the subscription of £9.95 for genes reunited, the membership use to be 12 months, now its onlly 6 months.

Is is Give you friends reunited free = double the fee genues reunited!

Bummer, My subscription renewed about 2 months ago!!! Thats Pants!!! Great that its free now, but just my luck, it was changed after I paid!!!!

Great news that its free, I actually cancelled last year. They have helped me get intouch with a lot of friends from my past which is great.

I contacted Friends and asked about the refund and got the following reply...


Unfortunately, as you subscribed some time ago now (it's actually over 3 months), we believe you have made use of your subscription and we will not be offering you a refund.

Whilst we understand this will not be the response you would like, we do hope you will enjoy the new features we've added to the site for you.

As you can imagine, in moving from being a subscription service to a free service, there were always going to be members like you who subscribed in the period before the change.

We hope you can appreciate our position and that we have tried to make this as fair as possible for all concerned.

I would suggest you all contact them and ask the same-especially if you've only just paid[EMAIL="paid....support@friendsreunited.co.uk"]....support@friendsreunited.co.uk[/EMAIL] :T :beer:

Its a pitty they couldnt even refund part of your payment even half as a good will gesture.
