    How much should it cost?
If you're unlocking phones here is a quick guide for how much it will cost on reputable sites.

Motorola (all): £6.99 is cheapest genuine I have seen. They can go up to £15. Usually done by code.
I have just obtained to codes to unlock Motorola W377s from SubsidyUnlock (ebay) for £4.99 each. Think they do virtually all Motorolas. V quick and easy to do.

That's very good and well done for finding a low rate. However I would argue that they would be an exception rather than the rule.
If you happen to have had a problem with your unlock code, would you have been refunded? Would you have got support? Are they specialists?

I don't know because i didn't use them. So again like any site mentioned above, research. If it came to buying an ebay code for £4.99 or a website code for £6.99 which I can review past customers, see a genuine address and contact details and maybe speak to them before I purchase for an extra £2.00 then i know which way i'd go. However you had a good experience so you're right to share it - more people should do that. :)

I'd say that's a judgement call on your own behalf.
Do a google or yahoo search and see what comes up in the search results (natural or paid). Then see if you can find some reviews for that site online. Depending on what you find will determine whether or not you use them.

    That's what I'd do anyway.

Sites like ReviewCentre.com offer some good insight but again it's a judgement call :)

I had my £5 asda nokia 1112 unlocked at the weekend £15 is now the norm for any 'newer' phones as they are becoming less friendly to unlock. i steered away from UNLOCK ANGEL
even though they listed my model...glad i did now.
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow

Sony Ericsson (newer - DB2020): Between £15 and £35 depending on network and method.

Very nice and helpful work. Thanks Mr Friendly.

About unlocking SE DB2020 models, I think we can unlock some of them freely. I have unlocked my W580i successfully. I recommend the following thread to read if you want to do so. Hope it helpful.

I suspect there is some software that can unlock certain models of Sony Ericsson. If you find it then awesome. It still should be highlighted though that if guidelines aren't followed to the letter with free software like this you could end up bricking your phone. Always best to be cautious and again use your own judgement :)

There are lots of unlocking scammers on the internet. Most Nokia codes are free anyway. I was surprised that I got caught by this scam but managed to get a refund from unlocktelecom.co.uk by threatening to report them to a friend at Google. That did the trick.

I eventually got my Motorola unlocked at a market stall. Better to see it done in person.

    Emails in reverse order:

    Hi xxxx,

I'm sorry your mobile is not listed on our terms page. You have been refunded now to your PayPal account.

Totally out of order. You basically only unlock Nokia phones. This is a rip off and I am going to report you as an unscrupulous advertiser to a friend of mine who works at Google, which I'm sure is a major source of your traffic.

    Hi xxxx,

Thanks for your recent email. I'm really sorry but the motorola v3 model you have specified is not listed on our terms page as one we can unlock from our own in-house systems, however please note as per our trading terms you are still in credit with us for another mobile unlock ,which can be used up at anytime from today onwards with no time limit. To use up your unlock credit, first check our list of mobile models we unlock on our terms page. If it's listed there, please contact me via the contact form our site with details of the new mobile to be unlocked and I will deal with it personally for you quickly. Also you can use up your credit by requesting a pay-as-you-go sim card for any of the main UK mobile networks which we stock, using the same contact form.
    Kind regards,
    Harvey

PS: I don't know anybody at Google. :)
  • Add me to the list of people who have been taken in by this IMHO misleading "service". Can't help feeling like a bit of a muppet, but I kind of innocently assumed I'd get an unlock code for my phone, not some advice to "take it to the nearest market" or "contact your network provider"

Have also logged a complaint, and will see what happens!

If only I'd read these posts first - hopefully this'll save someone else being misled :D
