• Just to make sure no one gets caught out like I did. I was trying to find an unlock code for my sony phone and I found a website offering what I thought was a very cheap unlocking service at £2.99. However what I got for my money was a generic email report listing my avaialble options ..one of which was to go to a "market stall"...ha! This is despite the link to the site advertising "Unlock Instantly Online" and a banner on the website stating "Unlock your phone today" . The name of the website is "Unlock Search" at www.unlocksearch.com, if you need a useless report, i'll send you mine!

Hey, I've got to agree that site is soooooooo misleading!!! That's shocking!

And you've got to love how they've covered their own bums by slipping this in the T&Cs:

"7.1 Products vary for each phone. Unlock Report contains options for how to unlock the selected phone. Unlock codes are not necessarily included in the Unlock Report. Unlock Reports are sent instantly by email, options within the Unlock Report may take longer. Further costs may also be involved, depending on the options available."
I accept no liability if you chose to rely on my advice.

• Hi All, first post to this site, but I've just feel so wound up that I have to warn others to stop them making the same mistake I did!

I've just been trying to get my phone unlocked so I can move onto a better contract. So I turn to my trusty favorite search engine and ask it, and behold answers everywhere.

The top response was this:
Sponsored Links
Unlock Instantly Online
www.UnlockSearch.com/uk/unlocking Mobile unlocking made easy, £2.99. Learn now how to unlock your phone!

So I thought £2.99 much cheaper than my providers request of £15.00 lets have a go saving myself almost a months line rental. I pay my money and the email comes back straight away. I'm impressed at how quick this services is.

Reason why it's so quick is I've just received an email saying:
1 Order the unlock code from your provider.
2 Go to an independant dealer or market stall.
3 Get An online retailers unlock code.
4 Download Some software (no further advise/links/etc.)
5 Get an Unlock clip or unlock box

So what I've paid for is a list of options which I already knew but still no actual way to unlock my phone. THIS IS A SERVICE I JUST PAID FOR. Sorry to shout about it but just want anyone else trying to unlock their phone to avoid the same pitfall as I've just found, with both feet!

You got caught by the latest version of the old "Miniature portrait of the Queen" scam.

You got exactly what was advertised.

Just as those who fell for the royal portrait did - a used stamp!

I am no legal expert - but - "Unlock Report contains options for how to unlock the selected phone" this is untrue - it contains so called information where you might possibly find how to unlock phones - it does not contain unlock information - consequently it is untrue. The site is designed as a rip-off, operates as a rip-off and steals peoples money by pretending to do something which it doesn't. Mr Mike Kapowsky must be very pleased with himself - probably doesn't sleep too much

Yes, it's a minefield out there.

This is where Martin's unlocking tips aren't much use, imho.:o

The subsidy codes for many modern handsets aren't available for free - even if you do find someone offering genuine codes.

And the alternatives are 'get a quote from a high-st. unlocker' or 'do it yourself with an unlocker cable'.;)

For some people it might not be worth the outlay or the hassle. The pence-per-minute costs for pay as you go phones are similar across the networks.

not Martins Unlocking tips.....I and a couple of others had all the original info and as it says in the first post of the NON nokia thread

you need to find a shop or market stall to unlock your phone,

Quote;

Most Motorola's , LG's , Samsungs and Sony Ericssons cannot be unlocked by code and need to be unlocked by direct cable or clip in a shop.

If there is not a code listed for your phone below then there is NO free way to unlock it, you need to find a shop or Market Stall to do it for you (correct as of 09/02/08)

Expect to pay between £5 - £20 for most phones for the person to do the unlock

if people choose to ignore that information , why is it the forums fault ??

I was referring to Martin's 'Unlock the savings' article.
He also says 'You could save £30 on what the networks would otherwise charge, plus £100s by switching to a better Sim deal'.

For some people it just might not be worth paying anything at all to have a phone unlocked (that's my opinion).
