Quick question re: setup. If my friend sets it up to his BT broadband account and decides to change back to the BT modem (don't ask why) and get rid of the wireless, will there be a re-installation involved of the BT software or will it be a simple case of removing the wireless router and plugging the BT modem back in? He is worried he won't be able to do that, but I think thats all that needs doing?

I have had both instaled for 9 months, just take phone line out of router and plug it into BT frog modem then it will be running off the modem. Yes it's that simple so long as you don't uninstall the modem, you wil have to reconect in the normall way but clicking the connection icon or what ever method you use.
There seem to be a lot of fiddly settings you need to get right, light the MTU value, and a couple of others depending on what provider you are with. Have had a couple of glitches so far but managed to fix them... they do recommend you DONT upgrade the firmware though - but then you miss out on the "Super" fast transfer rates.

Difficult to get going but seems ok (touch wood) now...

It should just do it auto, but it's a good idea to have the details and check them after it has set it up.

Who said don't upgrade the firmware, I was going to get mine all up and working then do that once it was going. Still a few more days till the ADSL is activated though

Users on the netgear forum. Said it was a complete nightmare and reverted back to make things ok. No harm in doing so... just revert it back if you have problems.

I am working via my BT modem just now and it hasnt been simple for me... It is going nuts, and Im having to connect via a round-about way, I cant just double click the BT icon like I used to 2 days ago. Perhaps its something to do with the settings I changed as requested via set-up? Ive been busy with other things today but Im going to give the setup another go, and if it doesnt work then back in the box its goes. I could call Netgear but Im not technically gifted and dont want to sound like a plank on the phone to them! It says on Amazon that it should be up and running in 5 clicks, thats why I chose it. If I knew it would be difficult I wouldnt have bothered. Bah humbug.

This router has an inbuilt modem and you should disconnect the phoneline from the BT modem and add it (the phone line) to the router. There is no need to double click anything to connect through the router - it is all set up in the router.

Change the internet explorer settings as instructed in the quickstart manual.

    HTH.

    Think of it like this:

The Router is a computer with it's own ADSL modem, switch on the Router with the phone line attached and it should connect to your ISP even with no computer on at all.

You will have to enter it's setup section to make it work the first time http://192.168.0.1 in browser and you should enter it with User admin: PW: admin (I think) look in the manual.

Just forget how you used to do it with the Frog and clicking connect, it's not like that with a router it is "always on" as long has it has power, no need for a computer to be on.

Hope this helps, it is confusing at first when you have been used to a frog modem.

Yeah, what I meant was that I had completely disconncted the Netgear and went back online using the old BT modem. When Im trying the Netgear setup the BT is unplugged. Im trying one or t'other.

But now the good news is that Im connected (With ethernet) to the Netgear, stage 2 is to make is work wirelessly now - cross everything for me people!!!
