  • Hi just giving some feedback on laser eye surgery, i had my eyes lasered by Optimax in 2009 and it was fantastic for the first few years, didnt hurt at all and my vision was great, well worth the £2000ish i paid, but it did not last, 4 years later and i am back to wearing glasses again for driving. I thought about contacting them for a re-do but my mother then had to have cataract surgery and it gave me second thoughts in case her eye condition would be hereditory and i would need as much of my cornea as possible. I think too many people ( same as me) see laser as a quick solution but there are so many factors that are not always explained carefully enough. look into all options before spending so much money.
  • Im having my eye surgery in Turkey next year. My Mum lives there and she knows several people who've had succesful treatment at the Kaskaloglu Eye Hospital in Izmir (kaskaloglu . com / lasike . htm)

It's not some dodgy 'back street' outfit, it opened 15 years ago and is apparently the best eye hospital in Turkey and carries out thousands of procedures a year. However, due to the low costs in Turkey its dirt cheap compared to what we have to pay here, their most expensive treatment (the pain free Wavefront method) costs just £474 (+ £54 for the consultation) and thats the price for both eyes!. So instead of going to a clinic in this country on a wet Wednesday afternoon and leaving £2000 lighter go to Turkey and have a 2 week holiday for the same price or less.

Example: Flights to Izmir cost around £250, hotels in Kusadasi (the nearest big resort, an hours drive from Izmir) cost an average of £20 per room per night and the food and beer is cheap aswell..so flight, accomodation, Lasik surgery plus dinner & a few drinks every night (say £20 a night) = approx £1340 for 2 weeks....bargain!..or £1870 if you take a partner (providing they dont want their eyes done too!)

Oh I forgot you'll need a taxi to and from the airport and to and from the hospital at a cost of approx. £25 one way..and you'll have to stay in Izmir for 2 nights when you have the treatment so lets make it £1520/£1870 for 2 weeks...

Below is part of an email the hospital sent me today.

Thank you very much for your message.

If you decide to have LASIK in Izmir we will be very happy to do it for you. I will arrange airport tranfers and hotel if you want. Your operation will be done by Professor Kaskaloglu or Dr.Ates.

We do LASIK on Mondays and Thursdays. We can accept you any Monday or Thursday. Please let me know when you want to have the operation. You need to stay 2-3 nights. If you arrive on Wednesday we do the operation on Thursday and after your postop exam you can leave on Friday.

The fees for LASIK in Turkey are low due to market conditions. But there is no compromise. Our quality of care is guaranteed. We do a lot of surgery and our doctors have much experience. Prof.Kaskaloglu is one of the best known surgeons in Turkey and abroad and he has been doing refractive surgery since 1990. Our lasers are the best in the world and very new. When you come here you will see that yourself. You will find more information on our web site.

    Pre-op examination: Euro 80 (£54)

Lasik Standard both eyes: Euro 525 (£355)

Lasik Customised (Wavefront, T-Cat,Q-mode) both eyes: Euro 700 (£474)

    Post op examination: Free

    Future enhancement (if needed): Free

    Hotel-hospital tranfers :Free (taxi)

    3* hotel Bed and breakfast(double)per night: Euro 60 (£40)
    payable to the hotel

    (Credit cards add 10%)

    All the best,
    MSTM

Many thanks for your advice. I've found it very useful...
Does hospital assist you with transfer arrangements, hotel bookings and what about after care arrangements too?

    Hi All,

It's almost been three years since I had corrective eye surgery overseas in South Africa. I went to the Umhlanga Rocks Hospital (Dueban, Kwazulu-Natal)and met Dr Colins who was trained here in the UK (Endinburgh Uni) in the early 80's.

The form of surgery I had was Lasik and took about 15 minutes to have both eyes done. There was a pre-op consultation to explore whether I would be a suitable canidate for surgery and to find how much corrective vision would be required. We discussed what could go wrong and how this could be corrected and I then desides to go ahead.

The cost then was R9000 which then was about £600 at the time for both eyes. I have to admit that I was visiting relatives at the time and so the travel costs where never considered.

I'm glad I had it done and now wish that I had had it done 10 years earlier.

    Good luck to all,
    Guy.

Thanks again. Please provide details of the hospital where you received your treatment (full address, web site, etc.)
I also wish to receive info about whether they take you from the airports, provide with hotels and after care treatment. Also wish to know whether they speak English... And if there are any packages available for laser eye tourists like in some european countries...
    Thanks...

I've had consultations at both OE and Optimax recently. If it were purely based on professionalism and the general feel then I would go with Optimax. However, the people at OE seemed really confident in their new iDesign technology which takes more readings of the eye and is supposed to give a more accurate end result. I have read online (not just OE's website) that it is considered the next generation of laser surgery machines, and that the only other place that uses the same machines as OE is Moorefields eye hospital...which sways me in their direction.

Does anyone here know any more about the different technologies used by each company or have any suggestions/advice?

    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi,

Am keen to get laser surgery to sort out my short sightedness - am tired of holding books up to my nose!

Have looked into it before and have appointments booked into optical express and ultralase/optimax.

There used to be an offer at my work rewards scheme which took it down to £1800, but thats no longer avaialble, can anyone please advise of current offers? Am about -8.75 and - 7.25. Open to other providers too.

    Thank you,

    Hannah
  • Hi
I have just booked an appointment with Optical Express, does any one know if they give you a perscription as with glasses so that i can pass it on to get other prices from clinics rather than getting an assesment from each clinic?
    Thanks

    Hi all

I wondered if people had any experience with this company.

I went there well over a month ago and had a review for laser eye surgery , for which I am suitable for. They offered me the top treatment of I-design I-Lasik for £3995 initially.

They have kept phoning me and for whatever reason I have missed their call.

I have now had chance to exchange a few emails with them and they have offered me the same treatment for £2995 with 30 months interest free. Obviously a 1k saving.

I would be interested to know how much more discount I am likely to get out of them, has anyone been in a similar situation with them and how much have the top treatment of I-design I-Lasik finally saved??

    Thanks
  • My friend has asked me to look online for a list of opticians offering laser surgery, as she is hopeless with computers :)

We are looking for a list with preferably, a great service but also not too expensive if such things exist! She told me her eyes are so bad and I cant remember the type of surgery they told her she would need when she went for a test 10 years ago but, it was going to cost her £3,000 for both eyes. Thanks

    Hi,

I'm wondering it it's possible to have LASIK done in only ONE eye?
(even though I have 2 bad eyes)

    Is this possible?

    cheers

David, sometimes they give the info, maybe you can ask for a printout for your own records. (I did this so I could compare results from each one to try to spot any inconsistencies). The info may be useful for other clinics to get a rough idea, but from what I saw when going round as a patient, each clinic will most definitely prefer or require even that they do their own tests. Its a very specialised process, not simply glasses, so you can understand the liability issues if they use someone else's figures/correction data and it turns out to be wrong etc.
