I work in support services looking after 8 PCTs. In my organisation the results are rather varied for A & C staff. My department has staff of 12 with a brilliant head of department. All of our staff have had good results from AFC. A lot of time was spent by the HOD grading and asessing the staffs skills and some totally naff assimulations were sent back by her as quite clearly wrong.
Its my opinion that a lot of this is down to how strong and determined your line manager is when the results of grading are sent to him or her !

Some other departments in the same organisation have had a very high % of staff facing protected salaries as there grading are being reduced.

Make sure your line managers fight your corner it does seem to work !

AFC not doing too well in my area either. Between all the community trusts people doing the same jobs have been put on different grades!!!
We have been banded at a 6 but are requesting a review, fortunately our manager is supportive. Have also run the request for review by a union rep who was also quite positive so fingers crossed.

Our trust was one of the early implementer sites last october and its been a complete disaster. My pay was reduced and I was put at the top of a band 5 so I,m heading no-where! My manager was very supportive and felt I should have been a 6. I made myself very ill having to justify my role and trying to work to rule. Its an ongoing saga.
I can still get very angry about it, but have to try to keep a level head.

How are people going with their gradings? apparently it should all be over by now:rolleyes: but I know loads of people who are unhappy because they've not heard yet so they can either appeal or get on with it.

it's a shambles... can you imagine imposing massive pay & t&c changes, just before you announce you are going to be privatisinhg out of hospital care:cool: Everytime I read about 'Commissionng a Patient Led NHS', I just shudder ...

BTW I came out as a band 6, but will be appealing it as the job should be a 7 and I am currently rewriting the JD, as the one that was submitted was obviously incorrect and did not reflect what I was working to.

  • Well, apparanetly there is no other job like mine in the whole NHS. I had to do a Job Assessment Questionnaire (JAQ) which was only 35 pages of stupidly pathetic questions for instance: do you get interupted in your job? If so, what are these interuptions - WHY do they want to know.

Anyway, one Sunday afternoon (12-7pm) and then all of Monday to do this flippin' form all because there are no other... wait for it... no other PA to Chief Exec and Chairman of a Hospital Trust. Hello!!

Anyway, as soon as the govermnent changes all of the A4C will change as well. This was done years ago (accoringly to an 'oldie' at work) - basically swings and roundabouts.
 If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain :hello:
  • Well I've been assimilated on to band 3 and because I previously was on such mediocre wages I got a £1200 back pay on wednesday after tax. I'm over the moon to say the least, and now I'm on a half decent wage yeehee! :p

Jaq process for me too. Spent a great deal of time accurately filling in the form with all of my responsibilities. The whole thing has been a farce, those undertaking the assimilation have little idea of what certain jobs entail. Mine was originally graded at a 5, I nearly fell off my chair, has now been correctly graded at 8c, I guess they did not understand what commissioning means.
  • Still awaiting my banding. 3 of us still waiting, all with the same job titles. From the feedback in my hospital it seems that supervisors have come out OK, but the lower paid staff are those who have lost out and they are the ones who needed to benefit the most. Are any of you cytoscreeners? how have you fared? feel free to pm me.

Back pay in our Trust - due this week. Strange phenomena occured - a "computer glitch" which has delayed payment with no notification of when it will be paid. (The computer glitch didn't affect our normal pay though) No coincidence that our trust is in finiancial doo doo, along with most of the rest around the country!

    Me cynical - no?

    Agenda for crap I say!!!

Every PCT has handled it differently...so where's the equality in that?
My colleague was graded down because our PCT refused to take the desirable column into consideration on the person spec. At her JAQ evaluation panel they argued that she had to take her degree out, despite the fact that she uses it on a day to day basis to advise Independant Contractors about issues.
When she went to appeal, her line manager won't support her which is crazy as she is now stuck and taking advice from the union rep.
Also, it has revealed just how badly written many job descriptions were.
    A4C? What a load of S**t!!!!!!
Don't even get me started on KSF!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
