:jTHIS IS MY FIRST TIME ON HERE BUT I HAVE READ ALL YOUR COMMENTS. I TOO WAS TRICKED INTO THIS SCAM, BUT HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR A YEAR & USING THE GYM, ONLY BECAUSE I COULD NOT CANCEL AND WAS NOT GOING TO PAY FOR SOME THING & NOT USE IT. I SENT A LETTER TO ALL 3 LYLE HILL, ASSOCIATED MEMBERS & FIT LIFE STATING CONSUMER CREDIT ACT1974, TELLING THEM I AM CANCELLING WITHOUT PENALTY, MY CREDIT AGREEMENT.
STATED I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THEY CAN SIGN ME UP TO A COMPANY THAT DISSOLVED ON 17.01.06 (AMC - AVALIBLE FROM COMPANIES HOUSE ON THE WEB - PRINTED THIS AND INCLUDED IT WITH LETTER)
I ALSO PRINTED & SEND A COPY OF CHELTENHAM ECHO (FROM TIETZE POSTED 05.11.09- THANKS FOR THAT ONE!) & PRINTED AND SENT A COPY OF THE OFT (ALSO FROM TIETZE POST 06.11.09 - THANKS AGAIN)
I ALSO TOLD THEM A HAVE CANCELLED MY STANDING ORDER AND DID NOT WANT ANY DEMANDS FOR PAYMENT OR I WOULD COMPLAIN TO THE OFFICE OF FAIR TRADING THAT THEIR DEBT COLLECTION GUIDANCE HAS BEEN BREACHED.
MY CLOSING COMMENT WAS THAT I DID NOT WANT TO HEAR FROM THEM EVER AGAIN UNLESS IT WAS A LETTER TO CONFIRM THAT I AM RELEASED FROM THE AGREEMENT.
AFTER A WEEK I HAVE A REPLIE, THEY HAVE SAID "PLEASE ACCEPT THIS LETTER AS WRITTEN CONFIRMATION OF YOUR CANCELLATION OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP. PLEASE DONT FORGET TO CANCEL YOU STANDING ORDER" (AS IF! THAT WAS CANCELLED 3 WEEKS AGO!!!)
 SO YOU SEE IT CAN BE DONE.:T
IF ANYONE WANTS LETTER WORDING (WITCH I GOT FROM A POST ON HERE AND MODIFYED TO SUITE ME) LET ME KNOW. JUST BECAUSE I AM OUT I WILL KEEP LOOKING FOR SUCSSES STORIES.
GOOD LUCK EVERY ONE:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Talt to trading standards I too cancelled my standing order and wrote a letter containing all the evidence I had to the miss selling of a gym membership. I eventually had a letter back saying " as a matter of good faith" , they would cancel my agreement. I had no idea that I had signed a credit agreement with no cancellation.
If I can do it so can you:j0 -
:mad:I have just recieved a debt collectors letter for £350 for an alledged gym membership i have necer used. I now know that it was a free trial i recieved but have never taken out a membership that i know of but as this was about 9 years ago i cant remember exactly. I understand that the company involved has gone bankrupt in this time and as i have always been on the electoral register i cant understand why i have only just heard of this. Do i have to pay this amount? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.0

Hello All,
Unfortunately I was burnt by this scam too, and have only just come to the end of my paying the "fees", rather too late in the day. The companies involved are very much passing the buck when it comes to queries and compaints. Indeed, the customer service department of AMC doesn't even accept phone calls!! (That's when bells started ringing for me!)
Anyhow, a lot older and wiser now, but has anyone ever pursued the companies for compensation. I figure both my wife and I have paid over £400 each over the past couple of years, and now we are struggling with debt since me being made redundant in January 2010, any compensation back from these Charlatans would be gratefully received.
Any idea how we go about this? FSA? Financial Ombudsman Service?
Would love to hear any suggestions0 -
:cool:Hi there, I have also been duped by this company. Back in september 2008 I received a flyer saying I had won a free gift, when I phoned the company I found that it was a free membership to the gym. Like such a lot of us I thought it would be time to get fit and joined, (not having seen the pre contract information sheet as it was hidden under another copy and the top copy). Anyway I started to attend the gym for the first month everything was fine then I had severe attcks of virtigo and was told by my doctor to cease using the gym and do gentle exercise at home. I tried to cancel but with no joy, I was told that I had to have a doctors note. I am a single parent on benefits (this seemd the only way to afford the gym) and cannot afford to pay for a note from the doctor. SO - I cancelled my direct debit. I received late payment letters and finally a debt collections letter, frightened that It would go further I have continued to pay (nearly 18months) the amount due. I have now, howver, found someone who wants me to transfer this over to them. I phoned and told them , they said couldnot be done without a doctors note. I am writing to them again to try and get this done , afterall they will still be getting their money. If they say no and I refuse to apy anymore money will there be serious repercussions?? Anyone helpI too have been taken in by this.
I am on a small pension, and can do without the added expense, not just for the gym, I don't mind that, its the extra travelling costs.
I didn't realise that it would be costing me so much extra, since trying to stop my membership I have found out that it is a so-called non-cancellable agreement, it wasn't explained to me.
I believe that I should have had a copy explaining all this before I signed, as laid down by the law in the Consumer Credit Regulations.
As I did not have this information, I think that I am within my rights to cancel the agreement, i.e. cancel my Direct Debit.
I have e-mailed Associated Members Club informing them that I intend to stop payment, but so far have not had a reply.
If I cancel my Direct Debit, how do I stand, what will be the consequences.
If anybody knows, please tell me.0 -
My wife and I have recently been conned by this company too. We have sent them several letters and e-mails replies were weeks later and totally avoided our questions and concerns. The telephone contact was a non starter!! Having cancelled our direct debits we have now each received a letter from a debt collection company-we have refused to pay. The collection company can only advise that we write a letter to them and they will pass this on to fitlife - the dept will be put on 'hold' until fitlife respond. Can anyone tell us if this will affect our credit rating? and how far will these debt collectors go?0

Hi
I recently received a letter from a debt collection agency stating that I owe them money for a gym membership that I don't even remember signing up to. I do remember getting a leaflet and going to visit the gym to see what it was like but I never signed up to anything. I filled out a questionnaire for them on my health but nothing eles. This all happened in 2002. I'm a little bemused as to why I've received this 8 years after I visited the gym. I certainly did not sign up to anything because if something is free then I expect it to be free. This wasn't and so I didn't sign up.
So I ignored the letter after finding this forum and now I've received a solicitors letter. Has anyone else received a letter from a solicitor? It's Stenfield Solicitors in middlesex. Looks like a one man band too. They've threatened me by saying I owe £609.02 to UK SEARCH LTD - FITLIFE and they are acting on behalf of Revenue Collection Services. They've said that If I don't pay within seven days then they will commence court procedings against me. Is this for real? I've never signed up to it so why on earth should I pay for it. Who can I go to regarding this? I feel like I'm being harrassed. The letter from the solicitors isn't even signed. It just states Yours sincerely, Stenfield Solicitors.
I'm really concerned about this now as I don't want this to affect my credit rating.
Please help ASAP so I can get this resolved.

Hi, i have been reading (almost) all posts on this subject. The thing is that the gym i joined has closed down for about 3 months. I knew nothing about this as i had an operation. I new nothing about this and did not receive any communication AMC. Therefore, i cancelled my D/D. I received a letter from Lyle Hill Membership Management saying that i was behind with my payments. I got in touch with Lyle Hill Ltd to find out if there was an alternative gym for me to join. They gave me a address for the alternative gym but is way out of my way. And would coast me a lot more to get there as it was in the middle of town, parking charges e.t.c. I explained all this but the told me to get in touch with AMC. Could somebody out there help with this? Thanks.:o0

I am currently being threatened by RCS debt collectors and also Stenfield Solicitors (same address and phone). I need some advice as I was told this is statute barred but they say it isn't..I know Fitlife had to change their credit agreements in 2004, but my contract was signed in 2001, I have never paid any money, and I cintacted Fitlife in 2001 to cancel and heard nothing until this year.
I have been in touch with them to deny the debt and they said it will now go to court and I need to provide them with my defence (yeh I;m that soft to do that..).
Do I need to worry or just ignore them0
