Hey there - My guess is that you can't use your Electron card on some on-line stores, as it would appear to be the norm that if you are under 18 your bank issues an Electron card. So.... if you want to purchase on-line with someone like Tescos as they sell alcohol on-line they can't check your age unless you hold a card that is given to over 18's! This is just an assumption but makes sense in my mind.
However, not sure why you can't buy train tickets with National Rail, if my theory is right!!

Marks and Spencer online, and John Lewis online, although both do instore. A shell garage on the M5 (!) but fortunately they had a free to use cashpoint! Also if for any reason the card reader in a store is not working, they cannot manually use it as the writing is not raised/embossed. This is rare but has happened to me twice, despite having money in the bank!

one flaw to your theory, Tesco accept Solo for on-line shopping, and some banks (Natwest and HSBC for example) will issue a Solo card to teenagers. I think it's from 13 or 14 years old.

Yep, maybe that theory is completley wrong! Oh well.
Oh and also, the one thing I couldn't do recently with an Electron card was to hire a car.

Thanks all for your replies. One other thing is regarding withdrawing cash. Do they charge you for withdrawing from, for example, a Lloyds TSB or NatWest cash machine?

Also, I don't live particularly near a branch, so is there another means of paying in cheques and cash? Things like salary etc will be paid in directly, but am just wondering in case I receive a cheque for my birthday or something!?!

Finally, if me and my OH go BR separately but on the same day, would we be allowed to open a joint account, or does it have to be in our own name only?

Sorry to ask so many questions!

Pretty sure you can use the Post Office to pay into a Co-op account

You can....you can also pay cash/cheques in at co-op stores as well (takes a little longer to clear & appear in your account though)

Cash paid in via the post office will be immediately credited to your account, cheques on the other hand can take up to six days via the post office and wont show immediately on your account as they would if paid in at a branch.

Because of this when I've had a cheque to pay in I've taken it to my 'local' branch (14 miles away) since I like the reassurance of knowing its in my account even if not cleared yet which it will of course - presuming its not made of rubber! - in 3 working days as opposed to up to 6 via the PO route.
