yes, redmerlot - I think thats very unfair.  Perhaps you could ask at the cinema if they would give you a reduction because you're deaf.  I think most people haven't got a clue about how people with disabilties cope with day-to-day life.  Even the simplest tasks can become mamouth hurdles. Things are getting better, but there's still a long way to go before we are treated as equals.

Some people who are registered blind do have some vision. They may not be able to drive a car, but can see a cinema screen.

You might be suprised to know but you can be registered blind and still be able to drive a car.

The only requirement to drove a car is to be able to read a number plate from a certain distance (69 feet I think).
You require no peripheral visions at all.

You can have tunnel vision be registered blind and still pass the test for driving.
Whether you could actually pass the practical is another matter but you are not ruled out on the basis of sight.
  • Being registered blind doesnt mean you are totall blind ie you cannot see at all but that your eyesight is so down the pan it meets criteria with the ophalmologis *sp?* who will then advise whether or not you should be on the vi *visually impaired* or blind list - but just because you may be on the blind register doesnt mean you cannot see the film. You might not have good central vision but may have good enough side vision to see the film OR *as in my case* you may have rubbish side vision but still have good clear central vision. i always make sure im not sitting *squint* otherwise it spoils my enjoyment i have to be sitting i good line with the screen.

Jut thought i should explain to whoever asked.

redmerlot where do you live? odeon, UCI and cineworld chains among others have subtitled screenings of many films. you can get details here http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/index.html

i have registered and get emailed every thursday with subtitled listings. we often go to subtitled showings with my deaf step sister. lots of major films are subtitled, even kids ones. sometimes you have to wait a couple of weeks if it's a film like harry potter and some cinemas are annoying and only show them on monday afternoons (my sis is in college then) but some do great show times that are perfect for us as a family. step sis goes to the cinema anyway, we bumped into her once at our local apollo in a showing of scooby doo which was unsubtitled, none of us knew then that the other cinemas around us (45-60 minute drive away) had subtitled showings. i honestly don't know how i found out about subtitled cinema but my deaf step sis had no idea that it was available, i suppose she always went to the apollo as it's a mile away from her house and they don't have the equipment for subtitled showings.

sorry this is such a long post, hope the website helps somebody! by the way the UCI cinema has its own subtitle machine and on one occasion it had broken so the cinema staff gave hubby and sis 2 free passes to come again, so if the subtitles are broen make sure you complain lol!

    Thanks for this

Stairs + darkness + mobility problems = bruises!!!!

Have to have someone with me - i suppose its cheaper to let a person come with you than be sued!!!!

This is a great Idea now I don't have to justify dragging my hubby to see chick flicks.

glad it helped :-) until hubby told me they did subtitled cinema and i did a web search my step sis always went to see films at our local and tried to lip read them. then she'd buy the DVD so she could watch it with subtitles. she's interested in latest releases, especially things like harry potter or any film with the actors from buffy/angel. she's much happier now that we drive her to subtitled showings of current films and i agree, it is well worth the drive.
