When does your name change after marriage?

we have decided to double barrel as both have quite short surnames that fit well together. Trouble is wedding is very soon and I'm not sure if we have to use deed poll or can it be on wedding certificate? If we do have to pay is there an MSE way or is it a standard fee? Sorry if these are obvious questions!!:money:0

I still haven't changed my passport because it was only 2 years old when we married and they wanted the full price of a new one (£50 then) to get it changed. So I've been waiting for it to expire. Now that's MSE.
With the exception of the passport, I was glad to be rid of my surname, as I'd never been keen on it.0 -

If there's time before the wedding the groom can change his name by deed poll, then the wedding certificate will show mr and mrs double barrelled. Failing that then change by deed poll for each person after the wedding. The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
I kept my own name ... I have issues with the whole traditional reason of name changing.
I am not property to pass from my father to my husband!!
He is not expected to consider changing his name and it my name. I also refused an engagement ring - he was not expected to wear a token to say he was spoken for before the wedding (and wedding ring) so I saw no reason that I should. He thought that was odd as I love diamonds but certainly didn't complain about that one!!!
I did relent to changing to Mrs.
I have the same issues over name change, and I also have issues over Mrs. too, infact I have issues over husband and wife and the historical significance attached - what the heck, I even have issues over the ceremony and don't get me started on the idea that the father gives his daughter away to the groom.
On the other hand, I have no issue over a diamond 'promise' ring.Domestic Violence and Abuse 24hr freephone helpline for FEMALE TARGETS - 0808 2000 247.

I wish we'd done this but we didn't decide until 2 days before on surname as DH wanted me to take his, I wanted to keep mine, so eventually agreed to double-barrel. So had to do ours after the wedding. Think it cost £15 each on deed poll and then all the associated costs of new passports etc.0 -
Check with your bank/building society - some require a deed poll if you double-barrel or take your maiden name as a middle name.
This is a really helpful site for all information about deed polls, and when you might need one:

If you double-barrel, the easiest way would be if your fiance changed his before the wedding, so you could take his new name.0 -

Don't know if you found the same, but it was amazing how many people in our families felt that they should tell us that we should follow tradition and not these "new fangled" ideas - just made me even more determined
My MIL actually said at one point that she didn't care what I called myself she'll still call me Mrs X
She didn't know what to do when she realised her DS was changing his name too so she couldn't call me Mrs X0 -
I use both names, just have to remember to book flights in maiden name for abroad although I use married name for internals flights.
Gets a tad confusing at times, I have my driving licence in married name - yet log book is in maiden name. And dont get me started on bank and store cards - many a time I signed the wrong name to the wrong card - scary thing was no one ever queried it - thank heavens for chip and pin0 -
I've kept my name and my DD has the same surname as me - although OH has a common surname and mines not really known and well . . its MINE lol0
