When does your name change after marriage?

I've kept my (Dad's!) surname and I've been married - well forever:D0

I kept my name as well, originally we talked about OH changing his name to mine, because I had no intention of changing mine, but in the end we just kept our own. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

Our honeymoon was booked in my maiden name, as my passport was in my maiden name (obviously) and it is not possible to change without sending off marriage certificate which is impossibe if you are travelling immediately. So answer is, travel in your maiden name and change everything when you get back officially if you are taking your husbands name.
This is not actually true you are able to change your passport into your married name approximately 3 months prior to your wedding by completing a form (see http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-amending-married.asp) however it does mean you will be unable to use your passport before you get married. It is also worthwhile checking where you are going because some countries won't let you into the country if all you documents don't match even if you have a married certificate to back things up.0 -
When we got married 6 years ago we were addressed as 'Mr and Mrs S...' by the minister, after we'd made our vows, before the end of the service. The minister said 'I get to say that first!'
When I was married for the first time in 1957 someone addressed me as Mrs.... the moment we stepped outside the church door.
Having said that, you do not HAVE to take his name. You can call yourself any name that you choose to!

How interesting.
I dont want my boyfriends surname when we marry. Its Hand. Attractive i think not. Also i dont like his family very much and i dont want to join a family like that! Trouble is we cant double barrel because mine is Wright, and whatever order that goes in it makes a stupid word :P although for the laugh value it is quite good.
I also feel a cow if i dont have his surname!
My husbands family is also a shower of s**ts so when we married 5 years ago he took my surname. He was glad to get rid of his old name and there was no way i wanted to be associated with his family! Should be colourful when they find out tho!! My dad was chuffed too as he had 4 daughters he thought the name would die with him, but now i have a son it will continue for at least another generation! If marriage means you fell in love, does divorce mean you climbed back out?:rotfl:0 -

I do love my parents of course, just not as much as I love my husband. Makes me happy we are the same, as is our daughter.

Once you get married you can use you marriage certificate to change your surname to that of your husbands. If you want to use your maiden name as a middle name you will need a Deed Poll.

He wont change his surname i dont think, but then its not the done thing is it?
I have thought about combining both our surnames and making a new one (if thats possible) My brother is 35 and has no children so the name will die out, but i cant imagine giving up my surname. Plus, ive been testing childrens names and ther are sooooo many that his surname doesnt work with.
Catwoman: Trouble is my boyfriend has suffered being the black sheep of the family and i dont like them for what they have put my boyfriend through all these years. I dont want to be asociated with that. As much as i understand where you are coming from, i would rather keep my parents surname who are 100x better people than my future MIL and FIL ever will be.0 -
YOu can change your passport three months before you marry if you want to. I am.
I am changing my name but staying Ms, it was a compromise as he got so arsy about me taking his name (of course he wouldn;t dream of taking mine, not even to double barrel!) but I insisted on keeping my title and him wearing a wedding ring.
If you want to keep your maiden name as a middle name you have to do it by deed poll, and pay, as I understand it.
I'm not sure men will EVER catch on with why we shouldn;t have to change our names - makes more sense the other way round cos you always know a child is the woman's but there's no guarantee it's the man's... DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
