When does your name change after marriage?

Sorry if I am being abit think here but when does the womans surname swap to being the husbands surname? Is the marriage certificate sufficient for this or do you have to pay to have it done through deed poll? Also passports do they need to be in the new surname for honeymoon or can woman travel on her old name?
Also I do not have a middle name - would it be too weird to have my maiden name as a middle name?

When you get married you can change your name to your husbands if you wish straight away without having to pay for deed poll. Your marriage certificate will prove that you are married and you can change you nme with your bank etc
You can have a double barrelled name if you wish to keep your maiden name0 -
You can keep your existing 2 names and add your husbands - you do not need to make it double barreled.0

Or you can just keep your own name.0

Our honeymoon was booked in my maiden name, as my passport was in my maiden name (obviously) and it is not possible to change without sending off marriage certificate which is impossibe if you are travelling immediately. So answer is, travel in your maiden name and change everything when you get back officially if you are taking your husbands name."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." that is definately the best option also remember when getting your passport name changed you may be required to show id in your married name when it is sent to you so tell the passport office what id you have and ask them to ensure the courier company is told that they can accept id in your maiden name.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
It changes when you are done traipsing around the bank/passport office/credit card company/mobile phone provider/tesco clubcard/catsitter/window cleaner/anyone else who wants to know with your marriage certificate.
i.e. it's not really an official process, it's just up to you to ring round and get all the paperwork done if you want it changed.
With your passport, I was told that I couldn't change the name on it until I had the marriage certificate, so I had to travel under my maiden name on the honeymoon. It's not a problem as long as you make sure you book your plane tickets in the right name! 5 years on, I still haven't changed my passport because it was only 2 years old when we married and they wanted the full price of a new one (£50 then) to get it changed. So I've been waiting for it to expire. Now that's MSE.:www: :: MFi3 ::

I only changed my passport into my married name when I booked a holiday 3 years later and forgot to book it with my maiden name so I had to get a new one then!

I changed my name after I got married so my maiden name is now my middle name. I also shortened my first name to my preferred name - this really gets officials! They always say "Oh you mean...." to which I reply "No I don't". To do this you will have to take your marriage certificate to a solicitor who will prepare the paperwork. I think it cost £27. It is best to do this before you tell everyone of your name change otherwise you will have to do it all again.

How interesting.
I dont want my boyfriends surname when we marry. Its Hand. Attractive i think not. Also i dont like his family very much and i dont want to join a family like that! Trouble is we cant double barrel because mine is Wright, and whatever order that goes in it makes a stupid word :P although for the laugh value it is quite good.
I also feel a cow if i dont have his surname!0 -

Why? Would he take your name if the situation were reversed?
No way would I change my name upon marriage.0
