Why don't you simply try it for yourself? It is recommended that you uninstall AVG 7.5 before installing AVG 8 see here
I have it installed on one machine without the toolbar option and it runs fine with obvious improvements.

  • What sort of improvements?
AVG has trapped two viruses for me (in about 5 years); one of which was in an attachment that "Hotmail" said was virus free.
So I have no complaints with the status quo.

Hay Ho I'll probably steel myself to get a roundtuit some weekend soon.

That is what I thought until I had to spend 2 days trying to clean my computer, when I got my first virus about 8 years ago.
Fortunately in those day's they were not as clever and EVIL as the professional crooks write now.

My partner got a dodgy looking Email once, so we forwarded it to my Hotmail address and a little icon of a bomb appeared next to it.

AVG has sent me a sort of pop up message saying I only have until 25June to get a round tuit and upgrade to version 8.

Ah well it is meant to rain on Saturday.

just as a point of clarity, if you are going to use an alternative to AVG, bear in mind that avira DOES NOT have an e-mail scanner, but Avast does.
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • I've been reading up on other MSE members' experience intending to have a go soonest.

I installed "McAfee Site Advisor" a year or so ago, and I really like it: being given traffic light highlighting on the results of Google searches, and being able to click for further information.

Does the "Link Scanner", that some people don't like 'cos it slows down searching, do much the same as "Site Advisor"?

Presumably it would be advisable to un-install "Site Advisor", before trying to install AVG 8 ?

When AVG Spyware + Virus scanners were separate items at 7.5 (are together in 8.0) there was a free Rootkit detector. Rootkit scanner no longer free?

Well I turned "Site Advisor" off, installed AVG8, turned "Site Advisor" back on again. They both run together giving a double "traffic light" assessment of the dangers of web sites found in a search. They disagree with each other - surprise surprise.
I will see if the extra overhead is worth it. Think I prefer McAfee Site Advisor.

I got a huge list of 400+ "dodgy" cookies. Methinks that perhaps I should use (say) Cookie Cleaner? Decided to delete them anyway and got into a nasty loop with AVG saying "do you really want to do this" and then "this could make your system unstable". Bearing in mind that some of these "threat" tracking cookies in theory belonged to other users of this XP machine, I've ended up with a result that is neither flesh nor fowl. But as you can see the b***** machine still seems to be working OK.
The new tool bar, which encourages the use of Yahoo, seems to be a waste of space, so I simply went ->View->Toolbars and unticked "AVG security toolbar".

Ah well "and so to bed"; my nerves are shot to pieces.
  • Morning all,

As you can see my machine is still working OK
BUT I've just had an interesting "error" message, which deserves a thread of its own.
