Whats better - AVG 7.5, AVG 8, or Avir anti virus ?

After reading a lot of negative comments about AVG 7.5 free's detection rate, I decided to uninstall it and try Avira personal edition classic free ( that’s the one with the red umbrella), after running a few full scans with Avira free and not found any viruses with that either I was just going to revert back to AVG 7.5 again but on the download page all I can find is AVG 8 free, and it seems to take up a lot more disk space than AVG 7.5, does anyone know if the new AVG 8 free is any better or worse than AVG 7.5, for example does it have a better detection rate or is it more resource hungry, or should I stick with Avira personal edition classic free for now.
Thanks in advance.

Not liked by all as shown here. My own view is that it has become too bloated for its own good.

No one AV program will be perfect. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses in regards detection.
Avast usually comes out well in the detection charts. I use the free Home version.

if you chose to uninstall AVG and Avira has caused you no problems and you can see AVG is a bit heavy on memory, why do you want to go back?

Thanks for your comments EXO, that was one of my worries about the new free version of AVG 8 that it was trying to do too many jobs at the one time which would slow down my system, I have been happy with AVG for the past year or so ( I had Nortons works before that and it really slowed down my system, after I uninstalled it and installed AVG 7.5 I also found nortons had missed a lot of viruses which AVG was able to detect and remove), but all i want from an antivirus is to check for viruses, as I have various other programs for spyware etc, can AVG 8 just be set to check for viruses and not check for all the other stuff, also does anyone know if Avira ia a good antivirus ?

yes so far I have had no problem with Avira - but i'm not sure how good an antivirus it is Woby_tide, I guess its just I am used to how AVG works and I like the user interface and the quick daily updates, but I take your point.

Uninstalled AVG 7.5 and installed AVG 8. On shutdown I get a message which says Com Server Warning etc. I did'nt get this warning with AVG 7.5. Why do I now get this message? Not at all techi.

this is a COM warning. You're probably getting that warning because you didn't first close your main app. Your main app probably still holds some references to the other programs/objects which you started up through Automation. So you could just try to shutdown AVG before you shotdown XP. this might help if not then to get rid of this message you will need to be a techie or get one to sort it out as its quite complicated and it would take to long to explain at the moment.

Seems that people are having trouble with AVG 8.0 perhaps you should read this before installing it.
