They work out on previous years earnings but if you give them an ESTIMATE of this years income they adjust the CTC accordingly. Yes we have had proper advice now and not someone sitting there guessing which considering the nature of the problem is very poor practice indeed.
So it appears the "guesses" proposed on this forum turned out to be fairly accurate - well certainly moreso than the initial figures quoted by the tax credit system that Lisadp1970 received.

I wouldn't have been very happy if I had ended up owing £1000's back to the Tax office because they screwed up. Thankfully I was checking this board as well as talking to them so I realised something was wrong in time to prevent a disaster.
thanks again all.
By all accounts, they 'screw up' quite a lot and i agree with you. Thats the reason people should do research and question it if they think it is wrong.
Owing thousands back because of an imbeciles mistake does and will affect your life.
Seems to be pretty common which is the worrying thing.0 -

In fairness to the OP, she has at least admitted it was wrong - many on here would not! I don't think it is helpful to start a row about it.

Not really as most of the guesses were aimed at around £10PW so humble pie I don't think so.
This is why double checking and treble checking are important as the only person that seemed to be after the CORRECT figure was myself. So between £10PW and £172PW we have finally got to the right number through sheer perserverance. Humble pie, no, a pat on the back for a couple of people here, Yes.0 -

I agree but we got there in the end and that is all that matters. I find it strange that if we hadn't worked last year that we would get £172PW but as he did work (and pay a lot of money in tax) that we get £53 and that is based on exactly the same income for this year. The system is strange and frightening esp for people like us that have never claimed a penny before. not even the CTC that we were due.0 -
I think we should take our hat off to the Lisadp1970 that she acknowledged the useful help she received on this forum.
Sorry I arrived too late to add anything useful, however its good to see that everything was resolved in the end.
Lisadp1970 I hope everything gets sorted for you and even though the tax credit money isn't as much as was first anticipated, at least you know you wont have to pay any of it back.
Just out of interest, if you are also looking for help with budgetting and other money saving tips, there are a number of other useful threads in this forum that may be able to help as you.
Good luck with everything...
P.S. Sorry about the humble pie comment. I have a habit of putting my foot in it sometimes.0 -

i`m not sure what you expect of a forum like this one,or many others for that matter, people will try to help as best they can,but for 100% facts you need to speak to the tax credit people etc,or at least do a little research on the web, after all its all out there:cool:0 -
