Re the risotto rice question, I use either risotto rice (Arborio) or often use basmati. The arborio makes a gloopy texture but the basmati is drier. I put onion, sweetcorn and bacon in my last one.

    That was me !!!

I might give this a go with basmalti rice and then I won't have to chance Mr T's again - lol !!!

Have had a spend of £2 for some nappies and yoghurts.

We also alled in to see my mum and she let us raid her Rhubarb patch as she doesn't use it but keeps it there for us :) So Rhubarb Tart for tomorrow :)

##I think I paid around £1 something for a bag, not sure on specifics..sorry but it works out cheaper than eggs. I just did a batch of cooking again today and substituted it for eggs and its worked every time.

    Hello folks

I'm new to this thread, is there an "Aldi" thread? if not I'll post here.

I'm starting to do home cooking after living on ready meals, I found some recipes which I'd like to create, however because I shop regularly at Morrisons, I'm wondering if I can obtain the following ingredients cheaper from Aldi.

Although I've never shopped in Aldi, there is one located next door to my local Morrisons, which I can pop into.

    Here's the list

    paprika
    cumin seeds
    Fry light
    chilli powder
    chickpeas
    ground coriander
    turmeric
    garam masala
    Marmite
    Self raising flour/ wholemeal
    Caster sugar
    Baking powder
    dried oregano
    dried basil
    Canderel
    dried mixed herbs
    Large Tin Chopped Tomatoes
    chopped tomatoes
    garden peas
    kidney beans
    mango chutney
    honey
    Veg Stock cubes

Any advice please, and I'm sorry for the long post :o

    Morning all :D

Signing in for what wil be my 2nd NSD in a row :T and i will have one tomorrow as it is a German Bank holiday here ..so everywhere wil be closed :D ... Hubby is on duty tomorrow anyway so he will be away from 8am until about 9am tuesday..then he has the day off, followed by 2 days away playing hockey for the regiment or someone and Friday has a day off to play golf for the REME this time i think:p .... so getting paid for working 5 days and only working 1... he is in for a shocker when he is back on Civvi street :rotfl:

Hubby has put in a request for a big pack up for tomorrows meals as they are now on "pay as you dine" where as before if you were married and on duty etc -you used to get fed for free .... and hubby only ate it because it was free :rotfl: so now there is no way he is paying for it :T .... so a pack up it is :D

Have already got a fresh white loaf under way..sat in the bowl proving -huby wasn't keen on my super duper healthy seeded loaf (which i don't mind as its so yummy i will keep it to myself :D ) and i have a gammon cooking..going to finish on here and then get some more bits done in the garden:j

I think we will make an os/mse of hubby yet... the other day i got a tub of quark and put some in hubbies jacket potato..he has asked if he can have that instead of cottage cheese -which is one of both our faves  ... well the cottage cheese is 47c for 200g (although we split that.. i give him 2/3 and 1/3 is plenty for me -to think we used to have a tub each:o )and the quark is 67c for 500g and you will use less as its rich ;) ... now i know he likes it i can get bigger tubs -almost buckets which will work out even cheaper:T and the quark is only 75cal and 0.5 fat per 100g when the cottage is 105 cal and 3.5 fat per 100g
    so its win win :j

lunch today is going to be a pasta salad with gammon in nomnomnom... i have some tricolour pasta..the red done with beetroot, and the green is basil not spinach -so hoping its nice :D

right enough jibber abber.. best get off and get some more veggies set...

    have a great day everyone:D

Hugs to Mrs Snowy and Zend.
    Congratulations to Jenny Bee

MrsM, we call it pay as you starve, as the amount you get now compared to when it was free is at least half:confused:

Well I went to somerfields for a change so need to update my totals. Feeling quite pleased with how little I managed to spend.

Spent £9.69 and got 3 boxes of cereal(crunchy nut cornflakes, fruit & fibre and crunchy nut shredded wheat...all on offer and it worked out cheaper than the own brand) so that should keep me going for a while.
Also activia yogs are on offer for 87p for 4 so I treated my self to them, love them but refuse to buy them at full price and then a few bits and bobs.

Then popped round to Iceland for milk and spent £3.35 in there on iced gems (BOGOFF ideal for my lunch box:o), 4 pints of milk and 6 of their own brand cornettos (only £1 which I though was a bargain)

So off to update sig now.
Today I really must sort out the shed and see if I have any more spare pots so I can get some more veggies planted. Ive managed to fill all the pots I could find so far and it still doesnt look like enough, esp when I read how much Mrs M has planted:rotfl:

paprika spices and herbs tend to be cheaper in Aldi in my experience but they may not have a full range of them
    cumin seeds
    Fry light
    chilli powder
    chickpeas
    ground coriander
    turmeric
    garam masala
    Marmite Probably wont be cheaper
Self raising flour/ wholemeal personally I think this is cheaper in the supermarket
    Caster sugar
    Baking powder
    dried oregano
    dried basil
    Canderel
    dried mixed herbs
Large Tin Chopped Tomatoes If you buy smart price toms there is next to no diff in price between supermarket and Aldi
    chopped tomatoes
    garden peas
    kidney beans
    mango chutney
    honey
    Veg Stock cubes

Any advice please, and I'm sorry for the long post :o

Hope that helps a little, I tend to find the brand stuff is no cheaper in Aldi/Lidl and a supermarket tends to have more choice when it comes to herbs and spices so you may have to go there to get all your spices. Thee standard spices/herbs you should be able to find in Aldi

Forgot to say if you use mysupermarket.com you could do an virtual pretend online shop and get the prices for all the things then take it with you and you have an easy comparison to see whether Aldi is cheaper. I know Morrisons wont appear but you'll probs find the prices from one of the others close enough to give you an idea.

Yesterday was a mad mad day. Got up, released the chickens, baked 100 scones, took the kids to their riding lessons, ventured into Sainsburys for milk (with the kids... fatal mistake) emerged with 6 pints of milk and a further 6 carrier bags having spent £19.54 fortunately I had £15 of vouchers from Toluna so actual spend £4.54. Spent the afternoon at the village fete. OH found 3 books and the kids spent a happy half hour on a bouncy castle, got coated in runny chocolate from the chocolate fountain, ate far too many cakes and had a fab time. Came home, baked a further 106 scones (made the kids count them), cooked a roast dinner with rhubarb crumble and collapsed in an exhausted heap.

Today is schools walking treasure hunt with cream teas (hence the many many scones). Planning to spend the day weeding in my veg free veg patch before planting all the fruit bushes I bought last year and yesterdays strawberry plants.

    Enjoy the sun!

Week 2 and we went to Asda instead of the usual Mr S. Asda is good for reasonably priced gluten free so OH bought himself pasta, pizza base and GF pate. Total spend came to £17.53 but will have to go somewhere elso for tomatoes as I think A tomatoes are expensive. Good buy of 18 free range eggs for £2 and 2 ocean spray juice for £1.
    Target spend £100
    Week 1 £21.85
Week 2 £17.53 so far but I think I may have to grab another 2 lts of Olive oil from Mr S for £5.89
    Good luck everyone.
