    Hi
I was in a similar position to you and became a seasonal 'host mother' for foreign students. It made me a little profit if I had 2 students together. I thoroughly enjoyed having young foreign people in my house, taking them out and about, speaking with them etc. Someone suggested that I could make more money by teaching English to foreign students so I investigated and went on a part time EFL course at the local college. It cost quite a lot of money but I had a lodger at the time and his rent paid for the course. Also, I was allowed to pay for the course monthly.
I have to say that this was the best investment I ever made; I made the cost of the course back X 4 in the first year!
With young children, if you have a spare bedroom, you can host and teach at home. There are many companies out there who offer both seasonal and all-year-round work. Later, you could work in a language school but this would be seasonal unless you achieve the Diploma.
Just a suggestion. Hope it helps......... :)
p.s. noticed that you can train for the EFL cert for £200 (very cheap!!) on an EFL website but didn't keep a note of which one. If you were interested, you could google to search.
  • Hi Lynne, Can you tell me of any in the Derby area? thanks

I have a website and use Google Adsense and Amazon Web Services on it. Currently getting the equiverlant of about £50-70 from Google and about £50 from Amazon each month... even though I do pay around £10 for the hosting each month, the extra revenue does help to pay for it as well as pay for a few indulgencies...

...best thing is that now I have set it up, I do not have to do anything - of course if ever I want more I will have to tweak it, just too busy cutting back in other areas to want to work on it!

thanks so much ,I aslo would like same information on how to get started info, pleae, Many thanks have a nice day,Regards

A really flexible way of making money (about £6 an hour) is examinations invigilating. School teaching staff are not really meant to invigilate anymore so schools are turning to outside invigilators. You need to be responsible etc and either have or be prepared to have a CRB (police) check. Write to all the secondary schools in your area and offer your services. My local schools positively fight over us! As I say it is very flexible we can choose which exams (SATS GCSEs 11+ etc) we cover and obviously it is school hours only.

If anyone lives in Nottingham and is interested in doing market research projects, I am always looking for people. For attending a discussion you usually receive £30 or so for an hour and a half discussion; rates vary according to the client and the project.
If you live elsewhere, I do know recruiters in other areas and could possibly put you in touch with someone.

    Hi there,

Thanks for this. I know this might be a daft question, but do they give you the answers to work from? How could that work in such subjects as English?

    Thanks
