Maybe the trick is to catch them and sell them at a farmers market.
The farmers will wet themselves laughing but the foodies will probably buy them "Organic Escargot" rather than "Monkey and Wezil's garden snails" might market better though !!! ;)

I keep hens and sell eggs for £1.00 for 1/2 doz. Doesn't make a fortune but the money keeps the chooks in the style they have become accustomed to. I also have 2 ducks, whose eggs make nice moist cakes. Have you thought of buying spuds in sacks later on in the year. I also buy pony carrots, whilst some of them do go for the boys they are perfectly ok for culinary use, at the end of the day they are only seconds because of being misshapen.

i agree with that it's like tesco value mushrooms, they go as value because they are not perfectly round and as such who would want to eat them???!!! heres the answer... ME!

I'd love to eat chickens. saw a gooooooooooooorgeous house to rent near here and the garden!! woo!! perfect for several little chickadees and my 30th birthday present (a dog) which 9 months on i am STILL waiting for!!! :D:D:D:D

Ok, this made me laugh and it wasn't intentional i promise. i'm vegetarian... read through my post to see i have typed "eat chickens" instead of "keep chickens!!!" freudian slip anyone???::D:D:D:D:D

My girls are purely for the eggs and when they stop laying they are entitled to a retirement. Have thought about keeping some chunkier kinds of birds for Sunday lunch but not got as far as getting any yet. Previously the children have reared pet lambs and they are now residing in the freezer.

I live on a modern development, and as such don't have much space for rearing animals - I know that you don't need much space for chooks, and I did look into it after watching the Jamie/Hugh programmes earlier in the year, but I think it is a little impractical for us at the mo.

Spud, those raspberries sound fab......with a little greek yoghurt.....yum!!

Afternoon - we are going to have chickens !!!!!! not sure why cos we don;t really eat eggs in this household - no one is that keen on them

Hope you are having a productive afternoon - I'm racking my brains to think of leaving presents - we have 7 members of staff going and lots of dosh collected.

Chickens! There's a *lot* of foxes round here, and I keep hoping I'm going to be able to go away for weekends, so I won't be getting any. And there's the small matter of a covenant on the property that somehow forbids keeping chickens, heaven only knows why - I'm on a modern development too.

But... Lucielle! If I did, I'd do it exactly like you, keeping them on for a nice retirement after they'd stopped laying. How lovely!

Chickens - would love to have chickens! But the dogs would eat them I suspect before any eggs landed on the table. But my in laws have a couple and they are such cute critters and the eggs are yum! AM - hats off to you and Weezl for an inspiring lifestyle thread - I wouldn't get away with it all here but definitely will be taking on bits of it!
