Given that 18866 is no longer just known around the internet thanks to recent national press, and with probably a lot of those now signing up are purely using it purely for free UK calls then it was probably inevitable that the cost of the connection charge was raised.
  • Now that 18866 charge the same connection fee as 1899.Apart from cheaper rates, another good reason you might like to switch to 1899 (if you are not a autodialer user) is you cant make the Fat Thumb Dialling mistake of dialling 118866 in error and being lumbered with an expensive DQ call.
However, FWIW one area where 18866 still scores over 1899 and 18185 is the facility to pay by direct debit, rather than continuous card authority (more secure).

That is a good point. I thought Call1899 had started accepting payments by direct debit?

Call1899's website states they don't support direct debits yet but Call18866 also states the same thing which is incorrect as ours is done via direct debit.

This makes their two VOIP offerings, relatively, even better value. Although I expect a connection fee to be introduced for those in the near future I would expect the VOIP connection fee to always be lower than the telephone line access connection fee.

I'd use VOIPBUSTER (a relative of 1899/18866). Free to about 22 countries. ;)
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Thanks for the heads-up on this price rise.

How long have 18866 been doing 3p/min to mobiles at weekends ...?
  • Now that the connection charges are the same for 18866 and 1899, apart from the ability to pay by d/d (which I'm not using), are there any remaining advantages to using 18866 compared with 1899 from a BT line? I have been using 18866 for UK geo numbers and 1899 for international calls to Canada/US. I registered for 18185 as well but haven't yet had to phone any of the numbers it's cheaper for.

I suppose if I did decide to use only 1899, that would be the cue for them to increase the connection charge to 4p to match 18185!

It's a shame the price has gone up but some of the deals these companies have been running in the past were ridiculously cheap and they probably don't need to do that anymore now that they have so many subscribers and so much media coverage.
