I find it extraordinary how anyone still believes the stuff written in various papers. GTA4 is being used by those wanting to make a political point to particular people who believe the world has gone to the dogs, and the game has been targetted in this opportunistic way, when really it's just one of many similar types of content. I imagine Rockstar the makers are actually pleased at all the column inches they're getting too. All publicity for this sort of game I'm sure they welcome as it adds to its notoriety.
Having played it for several hours, there's nothing as shocking in it as the first time I sat down to play Doom many, many years ago. There's plenty of other video games with similar themes, so why pick on this one?0 -

It's a BBFC certificate but I've yet to find a reference to say that this is a mandatory minumum age other than at the point of sale (i.e. no bearing on a parent giving to a child for example)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

How was Doom shocking? I don't seem to remember the option to drive round New York, sorry Liberty City and murder prostitutes in doom.
The reason that GTA is picked on is that it's a very well know franchise that sells millions of copies and is set in an environment that is basically the real world. Doom on the other hand is a totally unrealistic Sci-Fi game that involves killing alien monsters. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

How do you know it's unrealistic? Have you ever been to Mars?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Nope, but I did read the Martian Chronicles and that never mentioned anything like the environment in Doom so it must be unrealistic!
To be honest I'd completely forgotten it was set on Mars. It's my problem, it's my problem

Ooh that reminds me, I need to buy and read Blue Mars some time."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The reason I asked the question (thanks for your honesty, FebruaryCat) is because it sounded like he was a bit younger than that, and I simply wanted to make sure you knew it was 18-rated and not suitable for younger kids. 17 is obviously fine. My daughter is 11 and wants to play it but I won't let her, and I won't play it when she's up - it simply isn't suitable (well, okay, realistically a lot of it is fine, but parts of it aren't suitable). I wouldn't let her play the previous ones either, but I know some parents who have let their 8-yr old play GTA3 and I don't understand why.
Similarly, I won't let her watch an 18-rated movie. I do let her watch the occasional 15-rated one, as long as I've seen it first!0 -

yeah, probably like renting an 18 film and letting your kiddie watch it. i just thought i would point out that there is a difference between a pegi certificate and a bbfc certificate.0 -

Legally you're totally and utterly wrong. Here's what you don't know:
Sale of Goods Act 1979
Actions for Breach of the Contract
51 Damages for non-delivery
(1)Where the seller wrongfully neglects or refuses to deliver the goods to the buyer, the buyer may maintain an action against the seller for damages for non-delivery.
(2)The measure of damages is the estimated loss directly and naturally resulting, in the ordinary course of events, from the seller’s breach of contract.
(3)Where there is an available market for the goods in question the measure of damages is prima facie to be ascertained by the difference between the contract price and the market or current price of the goods at the time or times when they ought to have been delivered or (if no time was fixed) at the time of the refusal to deliver..0
