As it's all washed up now, I just had another go with the paddle and it doesn't clunk into position at all, it does just sit there. But I guess if it clunked into position your bread would be stuck to it and you'd never get it out, so it has to be loose

The paddle on mine (can't remember the make) just pushes onto the spindle and it is only a little bit above the base of the pan.
Does your machine have a viewing window, i peer through mine and check that all the flour is being mixed in on the first mix. Sometimes I need to add a drop more water and I poke out any unmixed flour with a plastic spatula. :D

Yes, but there are several things here:
1] The viewing window was all steamed up. This was the first use so I'd done the 10 minute pre-bake, then washed it all out again, so the unit was warm - and it just wouldn't start. Had to wait nearly half an hour of turning it off/on until the Menu button would go through and let me choose the setting. So the window was steamed up.

2] I didn't know it wouldn't mix, nor even think to check. I thought this was a magical machine that just did it all. And rather than keep checking, I forced myself to trust it and not stress.

aww huge hugs for you thats really disappointng for the first loaf esp...mine (MR fastbake) has done that when the paddle has dropped too early on occasion...are you having another try now? Persevere - when you taste your first yummy loaf it will all seem worth it! One of my fave things EVER now is a fresh loaf on a sunday morning, toasted, in bed with a lovely brew & good book. Dont care what anyone says - its pure, simple joy!

i'm sorry i can't offer anymore advice than the others. I too had a failed loaf this morning after years of baking them sucessfully and i hav'nt got a clue why.

But can i just say(i hope your not offended) that you have had me crying with laughter which after having only 4 hours sleep on the setee, then having to look after 4 kids all day and cook a roast dinner i would'nt of thought it possible.

Nice idea, but it'd wake me up as I am in a bedsit and it's just 6' away. And I have no bed.

    :)

ahh that would be tricky then! Could make it at night just before you go to bed perhaps so its pretty fresh? Are you on loaf 2 now? Loads of recipes on the fastbake thread...

what do you sleep on then? Even a mattress would (in my book!) constitte as a bed so substitute breakfast on mattress instead!! Just as blissful!

At the moment it's out of the breadmaker ... waiting the time to turn it out.

    It looks ..... poo.

It looks like a big nasty biscuit.

I've sat here for 3 hours waiting... for what might be a big turd.

PN - Sorry about the bread but that post did amuse me. I've never used one but a friend makes her bread almost daily(greedy teenagers) , don't know which machine, and swears by it.

My only ever attempt, many years ago by hand, produced something even the birds failed to get their beaks into! hope that makes you feel a teeny bit better. :D
Better luck next time - onion bread is yummy.
