Continued Breadmaker Carnage (attempt 5) .. starts on Post #87

For some strange reason I bought a breadmaker and now have got to the point where I am actually using it... it is making my first ever loaf right now.
I should be eating it (unless it's really rank) by 3.30.
Cheated for my first one (using a packet), but still slipped up as I didn't realise that the packet makes a 2 pound loaf, but my breadmaker is for a 1 pound and 1.5 pound loaf only. And I don't have weighing scales, so hoping my guesstimate on half the pack was right!
Firstly I had to wash out the unit and put it on for 10 minutes, which scared the pants off me. I dislike any form of smoking/vapour/smell as I am always convinced everything electrical is about to catch fire. But I sat it out while it smelt (well, leapt about panicking/checking more than sat), opened the windows to get rid of the smell.
Now first loaf imminent.
Using Wrights Cheese & Onion breadmix.

At the moment it's out of the breadmaker ... waiting the time to turn it out.
It looks ..... poo.
It looks like a big nasty biscuit.
I've sat here for 3 hours waiting... for what might be a big turd.0 -
Oh
What sort of breadmaker is it?Operation Get in Shape

It's a Morphy Richards compact
So, turned it out ... oh poo. Worse than I could ever imagine.
It was like a 1" high nasty thing.
The paddle had come off and the ingredients weren't mixed together properly and the base still had lots of flour on it, it never rose, the paddle was buried inside the thing.
It's bin fodder0 -
Pics:
1] The bottom bit, lots of loose flour all round it. Small hole because the paddle is entirely inside.

Tried eating it, hard as anything though. Managed to nibble some of the innards. Binned the rest.
That is a full 1 pound loaf. Allegedly. But it turned out the size of a large crust.0 -
What a disappointment for your first attempt!:(
Don't be discouraged. Maybe the paddle wasn't quite pushed all the way on.
Have another go, it's well worth getting the hang of your breadmaker. I was terrified the first couple of times I used mine.0 -
Persevere and you'll get there.
I've got a Panasonic (aka The One True Breadmaker) and have found the basic recipies to be excellent.0 -
I was pinning my hopes on that. To wash the machine, read the manual, create that took nearly 4 hours out of my day when I was under the belief I was about to have a lovely hot fresh bread lunch.
So here I am, disappointed and starving. Got to find something else to eat now.
As for the paddle. I didn't understand that. It was just "there". I wasn't sure whether to force it, I never like to. So maybe it is something that is a definite push/clunk. I never like to do that because it would be easy to break something then be told "Oh no.. just on". And manuals are never specific about force or anything.0 -
Mine is a Morphy Richards Fastbake. Just had a look, and when the paddle's properly in position, the top of the spindle is almost level with the top of the paddle's shaft iyswim. The first time i used it i didn't have the paddle all the way on - luckily it fell off when I was putting the flour in, so I realised something wasn't right. The paddle does often stick in the loaf when it's baked - just cut it out when the bread's cooled if that happens with yours.
Your manual should have a phone number for the Morphy Richards Helpline. Not sure if they are open on Sundays, but they would be tomorrow, so you could give them a call. I haven't need to ring them myself, but others on here have said they were very helpful.0
