The test really isnt too bad Ember. You will have an ultrasound on your breast and this will be used to guide the needle (very fine) to the lump. I got my results within 2 hours, but different clinics and hospitals do vary. Try not to worry....the statistics are on your side that this is nothing sinister.

  • I think that's good advice, if you can afford it.

Not easy, but do try to get some rest tonight. You'll be all the stronger for it tomorrow. Do whatever it takes to take your mind off it. (I remember endless hours of Trivial Pursuit and daft word games during a difficult time for us.)

We went through a-z of the silliest catagories, made up words, played the I went to the shops and I bought...game etc.

Stupid stuff sometimes helps. Sorry if my post seems pointless! I'm just really wishing you both well. x
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • you have my thoughts, hugs and best wishes.. it could happen to anyone... what a woman for being able to share your fears.. I have everything crossed.

I am slim too....did they say what caused these lumps when it isn't cancer? Why would one just appear out of the blue when I have never had one before?

I had never had one before mine a few weeks ago. The specialist I saw showed me a picture of the inside of a breast. Breasts are made up of tissue and fat. The tissue and fat cause undulations, much like hills and valleys. I really don't know why though one day they aren't there then next they are,but thats what happened to me. I watched the ultra sound as she done it on me and could see clearly the "hills and valleys" as it were. Try to leave it alone too, mine got very sore as I kept touching it and I got some nasty bruises.

Ember. Just done a quick image search and I have found quite a good pic on-line that shows well the fatty deposits in a breast. Its most likely these that you are feeling. If you would like to see the pic pm me and I'll pm the addy to you. Its not to scare you but to show you what the inside of a breast looks like. I know it helped me to understand about my lump alot better.

    Hi Ember,
I hope you're feeling less anxious with all the support and advice given here by the great people at MSE.
I went through the same experience as you. I had lost a lot of weight rather quickly due to stress and worry about my world crumbling around me. One night after getting out of the shower I felt a lump and went into instant panic mode. I went to the doctor as soon as and the first thing he asked me was if I had lost a lot of weight recently. He said that it was probably a cyst that had been there for quite some time but I had not discovered it when my boobs were fuller. As it turned out I had one in the other breast as well. My appointment at the breast clinic 10 or so days later involved the needle biopsy that I will honestly say was rather painfull. The results followed in 3 days I think, and the lumps were proved to be cysts. I was told I could have them removed for peace of mind, or understand that if I 'keep' them they may change in size as time goes on but to remember that they are only cysts.
    Hope this helps.

    Oh Ember sweetie :(

That feeling of panic is just awful.

I have never had a proper scare, i often think that i feel a lump and i get that initial sick, heart stopping fear.

Have you thought about going privately? I know it seems pricey, but i think it'll be worth it. I have been seen at Bupa many times, and can recommend them highly.

I bet you just cant think of anything else can you hun.
Maybe put a good movie on and hopefully your mind will eventually go to concentrating on the film.

You sound as though you have one hell of a good hubbie :)

I am so so sorry you are going through this. All my best wishes, God Bless xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How do I go private? Who do I call? I have no idea what to do :(

Go back to your GP or call them. You will need to have a referral from your GP and he/she will know all the local specialists & consultants, so can recommend one (or more, if you want a choice).

I'm worried Ember that you are going to stress yourself into more illness. Perhaps some stress-management might help e.g. massage, aromatherapy, meditation ... any of these will help.

Or talk to a Counsellor - there's one specialising in Breast Cancer here. They have a telephone helpline run via an 0800 number and provide emotional support.

    Best wishes

I have just phoned the Bupa Hospital local to me and I am now even more distraught :(

She insisted I would have to see a breast surgeon (I went hysterical asking why a surgeon when it may be a cyst :() and that would cost several hundreds of pounds :( Would also have to have a mamagram (about £122) Ultra-Sound Scan (£179.99) and needle biopsy (£360) works out at almost a thousand pounds :( someone on here said it would cost £80 :( seems prices must have gone up. Well, I just can't afford that right now, cottage date of entry 14th Sept, have to send solicitor deposit, pay all legal fees to do with buying cottage etc. and have paid out thousands on new furniture, we are cleaned out :( Phoned hubby at work and he said just pay it, we'll sort the debt out later. The lump is still there, why won't it go away :(
