The supermarket's will always ensure that they end up with a decent level of profit. They give with one hand in the form of eye-catching promotions and take with the other in the form of discreet price rises on things you're probably less inclined to check the price of.

The lettuce, milk and rice mentioned above are good examples of this. Other things I noticed from shopping this week were value tinned Sweetcorn (was 15p, now 29p), single peppers (88p).

If you've got the time and the option of shopping at various supermarkets/markets etc in your area then it really pays to know where the products you buy regularly can be bought for the least amount of money.

Just had a quick look at this thread, and yes prices are leaping up in some areas, but the last thing our Mum's/Grandma's did was to shop in one place. There were no supermarkets for one thing. My Mum was a SAOM, and even into her 80's she went to several shops/supermarkets/and our local market each week, to get what she considered either the best value/product/price from each. TBH at the latter end it was not particularly MS, nor did she need to, but more her only pleasure, it got her out of the house as she did not like going out at night, and she felt she saved money. We always teased her saying she spent in shoe leather more than she saved, but since we have finished work, now I do the majority of my shopping at Aldi & Lidl and our local market (we are lucky to have a good one still) TBH there is very little you cannot get once you get used to their product on a try and see basis, especially if you are cooking from scratch. I also call in Netto if I am shopping near our nearest one, it used to be across the road from work, but now 11 miles away, though they are opening one nearer. For anything else I do a very small Tesco/Asda/Morrison shop when I need to, but usually just take a basket, that keeps me focused.

Just been out for milk, our usual 4 pint up 10p from £1.34 to £1.44 and 6 pints up from £1.96 to £2.12.

How much more are we expected to take? Milk is an essential part of a childs diet and is now becoming unaffordable for many families. I know this is just one of many price increases on 'basic' items but this has really impacted our food budget.

Will be following the grocery challenge thread with interest!

    Hi felicity,

It's frightening isn't it! There's a very recent thread on increasing grocery prices so I've added your post to it to keep all the replies and suggestions together.

For the last week or more I have been looking at lettuce at .99p up to £1.09  and thinking "hell will freeze over before I pay that for a lettuce". Just been into my local somerfield and think everyone else in my little town must have been feeling the same because they have TWO SHELVES of them marked down to .54p each.

    Speak for yourself!!!!!:D

Seriously though, I have just got back from the garden centre. Bought a couple of strips of lettuce plants to get me started and some seeds to sow now as well for later on. Will plant them in troughs on the patio. Hopefully that will stop me buying lettuce for most of the summer..........
  • There were LOADS in my small sainsburys local on Sunday night, about 30 all down to 15p... looks like they didn't sell any that day so I think lettuce is one of those things that people can live without and they won't pay stupid prices  for them. I will pay 15p though ;)

Flipping heck around here it is a little cheaper at 99p.

But as no one is buying salad stuff got a couple the other day for 10p each :D

I bought own brand of 5 pints the other day it was 98p which is 20p a pint. I will use that to pad out my milk.

Sorry to say that I buy as much on reduced to clear as I can. Got 2.5kgs of spuds last night for 20p.

That might mean I can stick to £110 a month for food and cleaning goods and get my 5 a day.

    Yours
