 Sainsburys have just put up the price of their Bread flour to 89p:mad: I dont understand how they can justify such a rise...it was 48p last week:confused: It is now more expensive than the hovis flour at 85p!! I was really annoyed but got the hovis because I needed some. On the way home I decided to call into lidl because I had forgoten something and they have bread flour still at 48p so I got 3 bags(I didnt know they sold it grrr). Now I have lots of bread flour and no where to put it but at least I wont have to get it from sainsburys during my weekly shop again:rolleyes:

I was going to cook and freeze a batch of chilli last week and peppers had gone up from 69p each to £1.07!! I can't believe that the veg for the chilli cost more than the meat, I used to add extra veg to bulk it out, now what do I do?

All the supermarkets put up prices before the Bank Holiday so they can publicise their "great reductions - prices slashed" nonsense at the Bank Holiday weekend. A large courgette is about 30p and goes a long way when cut twice lengthwise and sliced.

They are doing it with loads of items. About two years ago when I noticed this, I stopped shopping two weeks before a Bank Holiday at big supermarkets as a result.

Angel, I noticed this too, my local Tesco is selling red peppers for 96p and I was horrified! But I think it is because of the BH reductions.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Anyway...I wanted to share a baking tip...go Vegan! No eggs, butter or milk and still great cake. I recently made a spiced carrot cake which to my surprise turned out really well. Ok it does use veg oil but I reckon overall it works out better value - especially if you're like me and want your eggs from 'happy' chickens.
    tasty! ;)

I am confused because if you are cooking a vegan recipe you will not be adding any eggs because we do not eat any animal products at all. That said you are correct that vegan recipes - for baking and all other styles are certainly much cheaper than omnivores/vegetarian recipes. I have great fun experimenting with new recipes each week and they never break the bank and my budget is very very tight:D

I just dont knwo what to do the cost of food is going up so fast today I did my usual big monthly shop from mr t and and it was about £30 more than usual. £30 is a lot of money and my wages dont go up that much. Really cross I will have to start to use the market for veg because it now is much cheeper even if half of it is over ripe

    Do you use coupons etc?
I noticed the ASDA strong bread flour is 48p 'reduced' from 78p?!!! It WAS 48p last time I bought it! About 2 months ago but still, that really annoyed me. Don't raise the price of something then advertise it as reduced at the original selling price! What a loddy cheek!!!

What I meant was that if I can't afford free range eggs I'd rather go without. So then I opt for vegan recipes which obviously don't use any eggs instead of my normal eggy sponge. Rather than compromise on my beliefs.I am not actually a vegan. Hope that makes more sense :D
  • :j I thought you were using your own free range eggs which was confusing me :j I have great fun showing my colleagues my vegan food - which they are always convinced could not possibly be because it is so tasty. One of the best things is that it forces you to cook your own because it is almost impossible to buy vegan ready meals.

does anyone know if the local market fruit & veg stall prices are going up at the same rate?

I've never used them much before as our local stall is no cheaper and it would mean paying for parking in town as well as the usual supermarket shop, but thought i might give it a try if their prices are a little more static than the supermarkets at the moment.

Don't usually shop in Sainsbury's but was there today with a friend. I got handed a voucher for a free pint of their 1% fat milk (ask at customers services for a voucher if you don't get given one, its valid till the end of the month. Out of noseyness I decided to see how much stork was compared to Tesco (I use it in baking), 500g 50p. I think last time I looked in Tesco it was 88p. I also got 1kg of long grain rice for 43p, compared to 89p in Tesco (and that was Value pack!). Worth a look if you have a Sainsbury's near by.

Is this only today? Was in there last night and didn't bother as the prices were as I quoted above. Wonder if it's only certain stores?
