You know I hated XP so much when upgrading from win98 that I made XP look and work exactly like 98 and you have a nice responsive quick system then. Just got Vista expecting the same but I really like it. No probs I have installed all my old XP software and am now networked with my XP machine ok it's a bit slow with 1gig of RAM so I might upgrade or use my downgrade rights yet and install XP but I really fail to see why people need to bash this OS so much?!

Because it's fashionable to hate Microsoft, just like it seems to be fashionable to love Apple.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • MoneySavingStudent is it Mcafee Security Suite 2007 by any chance? If so, I have a solution for you. Let me know.

    Totally my experience too.
  • Try removing McAfee using the links provided a few posts back.

Then reinstall it but use the the mcafee sticker update: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/misp/english/version_1.2/sticker_update_1_2.exe

You run the exe and let that start the installation. It solves a lot of problems with mcafee installations on vista. It's worth a try.

Let me know if it works.

Incorrect. Vista was originally based on the XP codebase but this was shelved and development was resumed from the codebase of Windows Server 2003.
That's not really relevant. These are all essentially developments of NT. They are the same architecture. Windows Server 2003 is essentially just a variant of Windows XP. The Server 2003 kernal even has the same version number as XP 64-bit !!!!!!.
No it doesn't. Microsoft redesigned the way that drivers and programs operate to ensure that they do not operate with more systemwide user access privilages than is necessary, something that XP did not have.
All this appears to mean is that secure desktop comes up when installing things. It doesn't explain weird behaviours, display problems, slow-downs, lockups etc when things are already installed. At worst the user should just get a message saying "no can do". It certainly shouldn't mean drivers carrying a Vista logo go haywire.

Yes there are some new APIs etc. MS love to add new things, but it doesn't necessarily mean the old ways should no longer work. And some of the low level stuff touted as new in Vista has actually been in every version of Windows since Windows 2000.
I don't know what you mean. I can save most Office documents in 95 format. 13 years back compatibility is good enough for me.
Not everybody takes the effort to do that. In fact most people don't know how to do that if you ask them to over the phone. I'm still on Office 2003. I had to download an expansion pack to read Office 2007 documents. How many people are going to know where to look for that or have the confidence to install it? I wouldn't have minded if Microsoft had embraced the ODF standard, but as usual they insisted on doing things their own way.
