Which version of AVG are you running?
  • i use to run AVG but it didnt agree at all with my laptop!
i had the most up to date version and downloaded all the updates etc
Then id boot up again download anything it needed
Then id boot up the next day and it would say it was out of date and thanks for using it! 1 day trial? and yes i have completely wiped any other version off before i downloaded it.

So i switch and BROUGHT mcafee which says is compatiable with vista on the website and then im gettings pop ups saying:

Mcafee personal firewall stopped working and was closed
a problem caused the application to stop working correctly. windows will notify you if a solution becomes available.

AHHH!!!!!!! it wont go away and is slowing my system down!

  • Were you using a trial version of AVG Pro or were you using the AVG Free?

Both have daily updates to refresh your library of viruses that it detects.

    Isn't wikipedia handy :)

Anyway UAC is a pain in the backside, you cant een run CCleaner without a prompt, and yes I know it can be disabled.

Yes I double checked a fact with Wikipedia, big deal.

No, you can't run CCleaner without a UAC prompt for a very good reason. You're allowing a program direct top level access to the registry which is critical in the stability of your system. Do you not think that requires protection?

Architecturally, Vista is the same as XP. It just has added eye-candy and other changes that affect the user experience (and eat lots of memory). As such, any drivers that follow the rules under XP should still work unless there are bugs in Vista. If Microsoft changed fundamental things that would affect third party hardware drivers then it's their fault as there wasn't any need for it. Additionally, if they allowed a manufacturer to advertise something as "Vista ready" and carry Microsoft's logo, they should have properly approved the product, which means actually testing it with Vista before allowing an endorsement.

If all that didn't happen then of course it's Microsoft's fault. Needlessly breaking compatibility with old products when bringing out a new product is the fault of the one who made the changes. That much seems obvious to me. And Microsoft has a long history of it; just look at MS Office file compatibility (or rather the lack of it) between practically every version over the years. It's designed to force the user to upgrade when otherwise there would be no need. I don't really understand why anyone would defend this policy.

That post looks like it was written by a Vista basher and put on Wikipedia. I would correct you on just about every point, but be_alright already has :)

    Oooh touchy ;)

It is a big deal when the average home user gets all sweaty about letting CCleaner do its Job, UAC basically asks the wrong programs for access sometimes.

I think they need to update UAC and have an option where it can learn/set rules for programs like a firewall.

It can get abit annoying having to click on it every time you want a certain program to run.

UAC prompts the user for permission to allow the program access to a higher elevated level of security throughout the system than the user has. This is making sure that only the programs the user knows and trusts are allowed to execute and anything that is unknown and could possibly be comprimised can be denied before it has a change to execute code throughout the system that can be harmful.

UAC never asks the wrong programs.

Software developers on Vista should now accept that they either have to redesign their software to be more compliant with the standards that UAC is enforcing, or accept that what they set out to acheive is going to require UAC elevation.
