Hi Guys
XP support: have a read of this
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080403-microsoft-to-give-xp-stay-of-executionfor-budget-laptops.html
Not personally a big Vista fan, thought I might just stick to XP and wait for Vienna (or whatever they decide to call windows 7) to come out but from the reviews it's going to be modular and apparently that aint good (I only wish I understood what the heck they are talking about!).If anything I say starts to make sense, PANIC!0 -

Im so glad u agree with me! lolI'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -
I don't hate Vista, no. But I'm mightily disappointed. Especially since I'd splashed out a not inconsiderable sum to buy it.
I bought it when it was released. Big mistake (my fault). Had terrible problems with drivers, printers, you name it. My brand new PC ran as slow as the 5 year old banger it replaced. It was just that bad. Eventually I just gave up on it.
Vista has tarnished the way I now look at Microsoft & proprietary software in general. If I'd bought TV set and it had given me as much hassle as Vista I'd have taken it back to get my dosh back. Why not with software ? Why do we seem so reluctant to cause a fuss after spending a hundred quid on a pile of kack ?
I think software manufacturers, especially the big companies, should offer a no quibble money back guarantee if you're not happy. Plain & simple. Maybe it would teach them not to release half baked software onto the public just to keep their shareholders happy. We just seem to put up with software problems as if it's part and parcel of owning a PC.
It really isn't good enough.0 -
It's weird I got a new machine runnign Vista within a week of it being released, it ran far faster than my old machine which was old but not that old. I had no problems with drivers or any hardware other than having to download a driver for my scanner. I even struggled to find software that wouldn't run. I was actually expecting not to like it and was half planning to put XP on but I really like Vista.
The biggest problem with Vista is that it does require a good spec machine with plenty of RAM.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
I bought a hp printer about 2 months prior to buying my new laptop but the photo imaging bit on the printer wont work with vista.
have checked hp site but they have no fix for vista at present.0 -
That's the thing though Bill ... I went from 256MB RAM on my old PC to 2Gb on the new one. Most of the problems I had were to do with nvidia drivers ...
Until Vista I didn't even know what a driver really was or what it did. Yeah, I was that naive. But I wasn't a geek at that point, just a casual home user ... you switch it on and it goes ... Vista demanded a level of technical expertise I really didn't have.
That's not to say it was all Vista's fault. It sure wasn't. But why release the damn thing before the other manufacturers had gotton their act together ?
Vista was just a "snide experience" all in. It's maybe better now though. Although I've no intentions of re-visiting it. I was so peed off I just gave the Vista Ultimate disc away to a friend and put on Ubuntu instead.
Now I'm a real geek. Have the Ubuntu skipcap and mug to prove it, although I'm into Mandriva now. The OH is quite happy ... she's never been happier in fact ... hardly ever sees me nowadays due to me going on the PC to do my geeky things for hours on end each & every night. That suits her just fine ;-)0 -

From what I've heard, Windows won't be supporting XP by 2010.
What year is it now?
I'll probably be more worried about the food riots and the 250 dollar price tag on a barrel of oil than whether MS is going to offer support to XP.
And my Mandrin language homework.0 -

Vista is the best O/S that MS has produced by far, its more reliable, more secure etc. Your problems with regards to drivers, printers etc has absolutely nothing to do with MS and Vista its to do with your hardware manufacturer and their support for vista and production of drivers etc. They were far to slow in producing decent drivers. A lot of people expect their outdated hardware to work with the latest O/S and thats simply not the case as technology moves on at a pace, granted, that most people find hard to keep up with.
Had people downloaded and run the vista upgrade advisor tool then a lot of problems could have been rectified before they upgraded.I've been using it since Feb 2007 on all computers in my network and have yet to experience any problems, recently upgraded to SP1, again without any problems.
Back to OP.
I have 2 computers on the network that run AVG and have no problems at all they update and run automatically.I have my own computer on the network and it runs Avast 4.8 Home Edition and it runs very well, updates and scans automatically. You say you uninstalled AVG but did you completely uninstall everything as AVG does tend to leave traces, settings behind.Check your program folder once uninstalled and delete the grisoft folder.Another thing you could check is the registry and delete the keys titled grisoft in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ then select Software and delete the Grisoft folder do the same for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key then Software key and delete Grisoft key. Don't attempt to do this unless you are confident in editing the registry as if you make any errors then you can do more bad than good, i.e. computer may fail to boot. You have been warned.
Try reinstalling AVG, the newer free version 8 should be available to download from today Thursday, give it a try and see how you get on, get rid of McAfee its a system resource hog.Cheers

See, Bainy, this is where you & I differ.
If I splash out on £800 worth of new kit I expect it to work. I expect Vista to work with a 6 month old printer. I expect it to work with a 1 year old digital camera.
It might be the dogs !!!!!!!! as an operating system but if i can't get everything else to work with it the operating system becomes the problem, pure plain & simple. I haven't got time to hang around while some teenage scribblers code up all the drivers. The shop should have told that all those cutesy little Vista compliant stickers were a load of monkey testes.
I should done what my mates told me. To wait. Silly old naive me.
Apols, OP. Do what Bainy says. Can't go wrong there. Everythings hunky-doodly-dory in Bainy World. Lucky him.0 -

I have a 4 year old printer and 5 year old camera that VISTA works with no problem.. The issue there is the manufacturers not supplying drivers to squeeze more money out of the consumer. If you splashed out £13000 on a new car and found out your old CD head unit didnt work with it then would that be the car manufacturers fault or the fault of the CD manufacturer for not making compatable cables available????0
