I know many of us hoard stuff on the basis that it might come in useful one day, but when, and on what basis do you decide that "enough is enough" and get rid of it? My OH has an ancient bike that he hasn't ridden for about 15 years and I'm sure he will never ride again. It's cluttering up our potting shed area which I constantly use as I'm the gardener in our house. Am I being unreasonable in asking him to get rid of it? I think he's saving it up for when the world's petrol reserves run out :rotfl:

If it hasn;t been used for 15 years, I'd be tempted to Freecycle it, or wait another few years and sell on Ebay as "vintage" :p

There's more hoarding confessions here :D

  • I stash anything and everything I don't use on a daily basis. Then, come a blue moon, I turf out anything I haven't had need of in the last 2 years. This is all theoretical really as I don't have a proper clear-out on a regular basis. If I did I wouldn't be knee-deep in tat and useless articles.

I think your husband needs to take that bike on as a project and get it repaired and maintained. If it hasn't been used in 15 years it's a vintage item already and older bikes fetch a decent price on ebay

My experience is that the end of life for "might come in useful" happens about 2 weeks after you get rid of it!
Which is why my house is in desperate need of a major declutter, something that I am steeling myself to do!

I have a mountain of clutter and I'm just starting to get rid of it - the thing that has come in handy is saying if I haven't used it in three months then it goes. I've got rid of seven ikea bags of clothes like this this morning.
There are many things in life that will catch your eye, only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.

Yep, you usually need something you kept shortly after you get rid of it!

We have hundreds of vinyl records which have now been transferred to sound files on the computer but every time I mention getting rid of them, my OH finds 101 reasons to hang onto them for just a bit longer. I may be reduced to sneaking one a week out to the local charity shop in my shopping bag !

    Hi Primrose:hello:

I have the very same problem and am a terrible hoarder.I find it exceptionally difficult to throw stuff out! I've been in my current house 8 years and genuinely dread the day I move house:o This thread kept me entertained for hours when it was about - I could totally empathise :o I still have pairs of high heel shoes, even though i can't wear heels and haven't done for at least three years. I just can't bear to throw the last pair out. They're silver and glittery and are lovely but would put me in far too much pain. Maybe one day i'll wear them?:D:eek: I also have a pair of Caterpillar boots i bought around 16 years ago . I just can't bring myself to throw stuff out

I've added your thread to the existing one on hoarding junk, so we can keep all the confessions together :o

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
