Sharing Internet between new Desktop and Laptop

Hi everyone,
I've ordered the wireless cable router that Gavsto has recommended and some patch cable - thanks.
Final question hopefully - do both the laptop and the desktop have to be individually firewalled with their own AV software? If they are different, will they conflict.
For instance, on my desktop I will have Kaspersky AV and Zone Alarm Pro - basically continuing subscriptions I had before my old Desktop went kablooey!
I recommended to my Dad for ease of use to get the Zone Alarm Security Suite although he has a 90 day trial of Norton on the laptop already.
If the firewalls were different and different AV were used, would they conflict between the two devices?
Cheers in advance.

Ordered my new Dell on Saturday but haven't had a confirmation email about the order.
How long does it normally take?
I'll call them later today if I don't hear.Filiss0 -
Just to clear something up, does your PC have to be switched on for you to use the internet from your new laptop. Not ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0

Well everything is running OK. Couple of final questions for my Dad's sake!
1) After connecting the router, there is activity through my modem even when my system is switched off. Does this mean that my connection can still be hacked, since no AV or firewall software would be running at the time?
2) Wireless connection has been eestablished on Dad's laptop, but cannot get any Internet pages. I suspect that our firewalls are blocking something. I use Zone Alarm Pro and he's using Norton that came with the laptop. Any ideas on getting this to work please?
Many thanks!

Blimey - you should have had confirmation the same day if you ordered through telesales. If online, it would have come the next day. Get onto them.0 -
Sorry - The computer has arrived and I'm fully set up.
The wireless network is running and these questions relate to what's cropped up since install.
ThanksFiliss0 -

re 2, have you tried disabling firewalls on both and turn on the basic Windows one while you try to connect, you may be able to pinpoint which one of them is causing it (maybe) by turning one back on at a time ...least it will eliminate if the firewall is the problemEx forum ambassador

This would replace the blueyonder modem with the router. It would then be able to connect to the computers through wireless OR cable.
Would need to make sure both computers are wireless enabled. If not you can get hold of Wireless PCMCIA cards for laptops, or wireless PCI cards for pc's... If you don't want to get your hands dirty with PCI cards you can get a USB Wireless Adapter but don't expect super fast speeds with it....
When setting it up make sure windows firewall and software firewalls are turned off on both computers otherwise it will block the connection and cause problems. Nearly all router problems are caused by this
Good luck, if you need any more help I'm just a PM away.
^^^ That was my first post.. see the bit about firewalls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats your problem right there. Disable them or configure them in advanced settings to work behind the network.
They're best disabled tho. You pc can't be hacked as you have a NAT firewall on the router. Hardware firewall. The only thing your software firewall is good for is stopping trojans sending information back to a user. But anti virus and spywrae searches pick these up anyway!
